I'm looking at this Warn winch for my truck. It can mount into a 2" receiver hitch front or back. Anyone used this set up in their 2" receiver? I was curious about the wiring and setting it up. Is it as simple as running a wiring harness to each location and plug in the unit?

I am wanting something that I can use from the front or the back. Since we got stuck (and I mean STUCK!!!) on our CO elk trip in the middle of know where, it opened my eyes to what I might need. Any feedback would be great on this set up. Thanks!

What truck? I made a 2 inch receiver for that very reason. It mounts where my driver side tow hook would go, sticks out a littl farther but works great.

Make sure your hitch pin or wherever you mount your hitch to will withstand 10k#.
Shear that pin and your winch may go flying!

They work great my buddy has the same one and it is awesome, and works for a lot more than getting un stuck. As for the wiring you can buy the deal that hookup to your battery then run it to the back and it has that red quick plug. Run a short one to the front and long to the back and you are golden. As well as those to I would also get another one of those quick hook up deals and but cut a pair of jumper cable ends off and then you can use it on someone else truck or on a trailer if need be.

I bought the bracket that makes it portable along with the quick connects - carry it in the bed of my RTV until needed - wiring is simple

You can't fix stupid

I use a smaller smittybilt winch but same receiver size. If you go with the warn see if they have a wireless remote for that model. You can winch from the inside on cold days.

Chad,
Get the warn quick connect plugs for front and back. In a half ton truck you can get away with a 8k winch but you need the shackle pulley. I run quick connect on my f250 , I changed out my jumper cables and small compressor to run off the quick connect also.

I've gotten my f250 out with an 8k and pulley but it was slow going. If you find a good deal on a 10k I'd go that way with a pulley.

Synthetic cable is lighter and safer also.

I would suggest synthetic cable on a portable winch, those things can get heavy real quick when your in the mud. What ever you do, spend the money to buy the proper tools to use the winch. A winch is like a tractor, it's cool to look at but absolutely useless without the proper equipment. The winches max rated pull is from the first roll closest to the spool, which means you often need to pull 75-100 feet of cable. That's a lot of cable and often too much , so get your self a tree saver so you can put a snatch block around and double back to the truck to take some of that length out. Since you have the snatch block now, and the cable has been doubled back, you have turned your 8000lb winch into a 16000lb but have also doubled the pull time.

My winch bag has a bunch of tools:
2 tree savers
2 snatch blocks
2 different lengths of pulls straps
Some chain
Gloves
A cable blanket
And sometimes that hasn't been enough to get me out. Do your research and watch ARB videos on how to properly winch

Thanks for the input! It's for my Dodge Ram 1500 TRX 4x4. When we were stuck, I was facing forward, and the only trees to hook up to were behind me. So, if the winch was mounted on the front, it would have done me no good. The portable winch to go into the 2" receiver hitch would be ideal.

The only trouble you may run into is wiring the solenoid ....... I have one on my ranger and F-250 never had to use the one on my truck but the one on my ranger comes in handy.......synthetic rope is not designed for pulleys at least that is what the directions say and you have to get a different feeding system for rope if you get a winch that comes with cable and you want to replace it with rope.

I added a front 2" receiver to the front of my truck. Ran a short wire from the battery to the front with the anderson connector, then a second wire to the back that connects to the front wire with a matching anderson connector.

The back hookup is important. The last time I was stuck, backwards was the only option.

Also, carry farm jack, two shovels (had one break), and a good chainsaw (helped a lot the last time I slid off a muddy lease road and got a tree stuck under my truck....that was fun experience crazy)
