If you planned to never live on some land you bought, and used it just for hunting or whatever you wanted, what would be the smallest amount. Obviously you should only buy what you can afford, but if you could afford 8-10 acres would u buy it, or would it be a waste of money because you need at least 30-40 acres to actually to make it worth the money and time invested into owning land.

A majority of the land I would buy would be mainly wooded if that matters.

I personally would not buy less than 40 acres for hunting, and only that if it was in the hill country, or the post oak belt.

I don't see the value in buying 8-10 acres just for hunting, take that money and go lease or do package hunts, hell go to Africa

I would not waste my money on 8-10 acres. Too many risks of shooting across a property line, possibly towards a house.

A lot of small tracts of land are surrounded by other small tracts of land. Have fun harvesting anything legal or big because it will be shot up quick.

Feeders and blinds on a fenceline more likely...

Those are just a few that come to mind.

Location would be the key, followed by acreage size.

That's my thoughts on it..closer to home (like <10 minute drive) the more likely I'd be to buy 8-10ac tracts.

It is always nicer to have more land, but I know several 10 acre plots that I would pay top dollar for. Location, location, location

My overlying interest would be in the value of the land. I've seen people pay too much for small acreage and they have no hope in turning it. Often, they buy property from someone that bought it for the same reasons, may be this cycle has taken place several times, and the hunting just isn't there.

That's my advice, worry more about the value of the land and keep from telling yourself that it is worth it because the hunting is good. On a small place, it can literally change overnight and then all you have left is the land (and may be the bank note).

One thing to remember is that even with 100 acres you are not just killing your deer. And your neighbors are not just killing theirs. There are a lot of worthless 100 acre tracts (for hunting) out there.

I wouldn't buy any less than 150 acres to hunt on given there is plenty of game there.

Correct.

You're all killing the State's deer.

To answer the question, it depends on population density, neighbors (very important), foliage, etc.

I'd buy 20 acres in the hill country. Have a friend with 85 acres and all the tracts around him are 85 acres, and he literally lets 5 people hunt on it and they're still drastically overpopulated.

I used to have 40 acres in Burleson County that had a couple of small neighbors, but was surrounded by 1800 acres with only a couple hunters on it. I saw tons of deer all the time.

I currently have 75 acres with 9 hunters in the surrounding 400 acres and I probably see close to 50 deer every time I'm out. Again, highly populated area, with a 600 acre neighbor that doesn't hunt.

On the other hand, you could buy 300 acres in West Texas and it will have nothing on it at all.

I wouldn't go smaller than about 20, because the risk of the deer leaving the property after the shot is just too high.

Smallest place I hunt is 12 acres... It feels tiny tiny tiny... but I see 30 deer every time cause it is hill country and COVERD UP, WAY OVERPOPULATED....

But if i'm buying... I'm buying the absolute most I can. 30 acres would be a good place to start...

If it had lignite or oil or a bar...I would definitely buy an 8 acre plot.

I guess location is important, but I don't think I would ever buy something much less than 150 acres for deer hunting purposes. Sure I have hunted smaller places and seen plenty of deer and shot plenty of deer, but it different on little bitty places.

Definitely can't argue with location! I hunt 2 places that are both under 300 acres and have had a lot of luck. Both have large tracts around them and we do what we can in the feeding department to give them a reason to visit. Always see deer and the quality is there as well. I know of a 10 acre tract that I would buy just for deer hunting if it ever came available at a decent per acre price because of the location.

For deer I wouldn't go less than 50 - personally. If I just wanted a place to plink and shoot duck dove, 20 acres with a tank would be enough - FOR ME.

And if everyone on each 85 acre tract practiced the same "management" strategy as your friend, there would be a lot of barren 85 acre tracts soon.

Typically, when larger ranches are split into 2 or 300 acre plots, they can be awesome for a time. But 9 times out of 10 they end up worthless for deer hunting. Unless actually seeing a deer or killing one is a priority with you.

The point is, sometimes you get lucky with small tracts. But luck is usually fleeting.

By all means, ignore the facts if they are inconvenient. They never change though.

Perhaps you're missing the obviously outlined point: There's way, way too many deer. That's why he begs people to hunt out there. You shake a bucket of corn and there are 40 deer begging for it 5 minutes later.

Given that you don't know the "facts", it's surprising you would suggest I'm ignoring them.

10,000 acres is the least I would buy for hunting purposes. That's why I lease.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

We have a neighbor whose one acre butts up against our 300 and the other neighbors 1000. He has a feeder behind his house and always kills some good deer. I guess if your on the right one acre that's plenty.

Judging by posts here most people would consider that dude on the one acre a pain in the arse shooting their deer though. I wouldn't want to be that guy.

In the right area I would hunt on any size property as long as its legal and safe. Iv hunted on places as small as 8acres and bought 40 to live on and hunt. Its all about location...and price since I cant afford a large track of land
