Hi Guys, looking for experience here... Picked up a nice rem 700 in 308 with the Long Heavy varmint barrel. I want to put some quality Glass on it. Starting out let me say I have a rem 700 in 270 for my deer rifle bought used and came with a Nikon buckmaster type scope with BDC.. (ive only held right on and never shot more than 150 yards...).
Willing to spend up to 600 - 800 max but not more than will actually be used ... recommendations please....

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Here ya' go. I have this scope on my CZ 550 Varmint in .308 with a 26" bull barrel. The adjustments are positive, repeatable, and reliable, and it passed my box-the-scope test. http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Elite-Ret...bushnell+scopesedited to add: Don't let the Bushnell name scare you away. They've been putting out quality glass the past few years. This is a lot of scope for the money.

My vote is for the Zeiss Conquest. I have them on everything from 243 Win up to 375 H&H and 338 win mag. They hold zero and have very clear glass.

Zeiss or Zeiss, either way you can't lose. Redhawkrifles.com has some good ones with great prices right now. I've bought a couple of Zeiss from them. Great folks to deal with.

I wouldn't be putting a run of the mill hunting scope on a heavy barrel target/varmint type rifle even if it is a Zeiss. Imo that defeats tge purpose of the gun.

Interesting! How can anyone recommend a scope when the OP has not told you the purpose of the rifle? Texaspirate, if you can tell us what your primary use is or plan for the rifle, it will help determine the best scope and features for your needs.
For example, IF the rifle is to be used for longer range shooting (dialing or holding on the reticle), then the Zeiss Conquest is one of the worst options for the rifle. Especially if the scope does not have a parallax adjustment. I have seen several Zeiss Conquest models (shot and owned one) shoot great 200 yards and in, but stretch it out to 400+, and groups open way up with no consistency. Plus, Zeiss scope turrets are 1/4", or inch per 100 yards (IPHY), which sucks for dialing elevation and windage, and running trajectory data. Sure, they have great clarity, but on a tactical rifle, a Conquest is the last thing I would consider. If the rifle will not be dialed or used for 200 yards and in, the a Conquest is not a bad choice.
