I just joined a new hunting club on timber land. This is my first time joining a club. I am used to family/friend leases, so this is new to me.
I of course will need to gather things in time, all at once just adds up to a good deal of money.
I need to get 2 things first for our camp. Small camper and a generator. I am in the process of looking for both. I just don't know what size/type of generator to get for a small camper. Camper would probably have a tv, micro, fridge, stove, ac/heat, and prob small bath (I know, wife wont let me buy unless it has a shower/toilet).
I don't know what to buy, hoping some of you have some good advice/suggestions. This is for East Texas, and we have access all year.

Also, any advice on types of feeders and if I should build a blind vs buy one, would be awesome too. Obviously less than 2 months away from season, so I don't have much time. (we get 2 blinds/gun, lots of hogs and deer)

Thanks!

Honestly I would say spend what you can and make do with what you have till you can afford what you need. Hunted many times without a camper. Is it nice? Can be, but you sure don't need one. Put up tripod or tree stand instead of a blind maybe.

If you have mechanical ability building blinds and feeders isn't hard just takes a little time.

Tread lightly and don't go overboard until you have experienced this lease/club and it benefits or faults. I would hate to become too invested in a place and then realize it's not for me.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

Good points. I was thinking I might just pitch a tent this season, make a fire pit, and get a generator to keep some power for a tv, cellphone, etc... (it is football season now!). A cooler can be my fridge for now I suppose.
I do need to get a 4 wheeler, regardless if I leave this club or not. Never owned one. Anybody have suggestions on what to look for for deer/hog hunting, recreational, and can handle 2 people. Prob leaning towards a used one, they seem expensive esp if you add the trailer.

Always appreciate everyone's input, thank you.

Lots of old campers always available on Craig's List. I have gotten a lot of things for my deer lease from sellers on CL at a fraction of what they would have cost new. Just use common sense as you would when buying from anyone else.

Just take your time and grab the deals as you find them.

As for finding a place at the new lease, just lay low and help out whenever you can, knowing that you're an unknown to the existing members as much as they are to you. Simply put, try to be the first to help and the last to shoot unless a real bruiser walks out in front of you.

I know im in the minority on this, but I have hunted since I was 10 without an ATV, still don't have one and still don't need one. Personally I do not like them and wont use one for hunting, they are too loud for me. If you want one then great, but don't think that you "need" to get one. A lot of that will depend on where you hunt how far and what terrain you have to cross. Ive had several stands that were well over a mile to walk to. The walk is good for you.

No argument here. The more you walk, the more you see.

Still, when it comes time to get deer and equipment from point A to B, you can't beat an ATV or UTV. I only wish Honda had come up with the idea long before I was a kid. It's never fun dragging a deer a mile or more.

Here is another place to check for campers or generators- www.TexasBowhunter.com. They have a classified section and always have deer camp trailers for sale. Generators also come up quite often along with four wheelers and UTV's. Many times they don't post a phone number so you have to PM them if you are interested so you will have to register (I believe) in order to send a PM. Where in east Texas will you be hunting?

I would look at something like the two honda recons in the classifieds. That's what I bought for my wife and I. Two new recons was cheaper than 1 big bike. I work the heck out of them and they will run 40+ on the big road. Having one bike was a pain since her stand is 4 miles from camp.

The cheap champion 3500 watt generator from tractor supply runs my camper just fine. That's with a 13,500btu AC electric hot water, microwave, coffee pot etc.. Probably would not run them all at the same time but for a $300 generator it's fine. If you have the $$ get a honda invertor.

My favorite hunt was on a piece of land I got the first week of rifle season. I didn't have time to set anything up so I got a $39.99 popup blind and found a trail 2nd weekend of rifle season and I got an old 10 point. I walked about 150 yards from my truck. Dad was mad cause he walked about 1/2 a mile.

Rule 1 is be patient and never hesitate to pass up any deal that isn't quite right. Just keep checking CL until you find the deals are clearly right for your needs and wallet.

That may be my issue. Not sure if my Chevy can make it all the way back to some places. Not a 4 wheel drive, so prob need something I wont be stuck in all the time.
thx

I would suggest that if you are going to buy a trailer get one a little larger than you are thinking - it will get tight quickly - there are so many out there for sale that you can get a larger one for a fair price - don't get a new or newer one - for deer camp an older used one is fine IMO

You can't fix stupid

I second the Champion 400kw gen. This time of year Tractor Supply, and Cabela's usually puts them on sale and you can get one with the wheel kit, get the wheel kit, and sometimes the cover also for $300. Just make sure you maintain it and run it often. The first 2 years I was on a lease my buddy and I stayed in a tent, then I found a 16ft trailer for $300. Buy the time you buy a feeder and a ladder to fill it for a few dollars more you could have bought a crank up feeder. Just my 2cents

If you know how to swing a hammer, you can build an insulated building pretty easy with 2x4 and T1-11 siding. Pretty easy to add on when you want to do a bathroom or something like that. If stay with 8' wide sections, you can always take it apart and bring to new lease later. I got lots of co-workers with 8x12 buildings in Colorado and Wyoming. They sleep 4 pretty comfortably. With 4 people in there, you radiate enough heat to keep the place warm at night.

If you are wanting something for family, a good trailer is probably better. You can take it into town every month to dump waste and fill with water/etc.

What about just getting a POD 12' for this year?

http://www.pods.com/Moving.aspx

I think its like $90 delivery and around $125 per month.

You'd find out if this lease is the right place for you. It would be an instant and secure place to keep your gear.
