My wife, her sister, my brother in law and myself were dove hunting yesterday afternoon on a local public field when we saw a game warden start checking everyone in the field. I didn't think much of it cause I've been checked numerous times and were always in the clear. He walks straight through the middle of the field not much flying so I could care less, by the time he got to us we were already unloaded with hunting license in hand. He starts talking about hearing shots asking if we were the group hunting the same spot that morning and wanted to see my shell bag and looking all around me granted he was doing his job which I respect but we had zero birds between the 4 of us. He acted like we were hiding something, which we weren't. Then informed me we were required to have hunter orange on. I have hunted public for years and read the rules each year to see if anything has changed, which nothing has. So the rule is 144 square inches unless hunting turkey or migratory birds. So can a warden make up his own rules, even if the rules say different? Just curious

Was it the short Hispanic warden? He said the same thing yesterday morning to my group. We were just like you - ready and waiting and fully legal. He said he could give a ticket for it. I just said yes sir knowing he was wrong. Gonna have a chat with some other wardens about it tomorrow.

If you were at the public fields in Collin county I am sure it's the same guy. It was like he was irritated that we were completely legal.

Don't have a chat with other wardens about it, call his captain and have a discussion about it.

amazing to hear this, and other stories, of the wardens own "interpretations" of the laws. If we are supposed to know all the laws while hunting isn't it reasonable that they also know them. Similar to the folks on TFF complaining about one on Fork making them discharge their fire extinguishers to prove they work which renders them useless for an actual fire, or the warden's interpretation on dove hunting with a deer feeder "anywhere" on the property.

A couple yrs ago I was on public dove land and had a orange hat on cause I thought u had to on public land, so game warden came by to check us and informed me it wasn't needed for migratory birds, he laughed and I read the rules. I felt dumb , oh well !!!

Unless that particular field has its own rules for hunter orange, it sounds like he was wrong. I was checked for license, birds and plugs by a warden on opening day at a public site too, and not a word was mentioned about orange -- and none of the multitudes of opening day hunters was wearing any.
The warden who checked me was friendly and courteous, by the way. I think he was just relieved to get someone who actually knew the rules, unlike the clowns in front of us who had no hunting licenses, no driver's licenses (I heard the driver say his was suspended when he got his DWI) and their 20 or so birds were co-mingled.

Seems as if hunting public or on one of the big lease fields your odds of getting checked go way up, guess easier that way to check more people.

It was Collin county and it was the Hispanic game warden, I wasn't going to argue just said I thought if hunting migratory it wasn't required and left it at that. Idk why he was irritated we were all nice yes sir no sir and tried to lighten his mood it wasn't working. It was kinda funny when everyone quit talking cause we knew he wasn't having the best day. Oh well I'll continue to read the rules every year follow them and when someone tries to write a ticket I'll pull out my book and make them look confused.

There have been lots of folks making excuses for game wardens "having a bad day", I don't have the option of changing rules on my bad days. Not a game warden alive that shouldn't expect dove opener to be busy, and hot.

Maybe he didn't consider the doves "migratory" as they were local doves
I'd ask him if he's pregnant. He missed a s__tload of periods. I'll take "things that look like a uterus" for $200 Alex.

As the saying goes, there's always three sides to every story.... the one telling the story, the one the side of the one the story is about.............. and the truth, wherever it may lie

I haven't had an issue with GW at all this year, yet.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.
