Charge a boat load of fun things on the credit cards if they are still good grin I would call the sheriff and let him handle it. Hard to prove that man lost it since he will probably claim someone stole it from him.

Yep. Won't do much good and law can't do much about it. I would send him a letter thanking him for the $47 he left me in his wallet.

You could run an ad for a wallet in the lost and found in his hometown newspaper. See if he claims it. Then tell him when he calls that the sheriff has it.

I would get the sheriff or deputy to go along on the "visit".

I would contact the local sheriff or game warden first.

And then he demands to know what you did with the cash. If he lost the wallet while poaching, as you assume, then all the original contents should be there and his claim that you have taken the cash is as valid as your claim that he was poaching.

Of course you assume he was poaching because he had a hunting license in my wallet. My wallet contains my hunting license and I lost it in Walmart once, but I wasn't hunting there. It very well may be that the guy is involved with some sort of utility work, oil company work, etc. on the property. Nobody knows him as a hunter because he wasn't hunting there...if that is the case.

Nothing particularly good is going to come from this encounter in terms of settling some sort of poaching score with this guy. He may have genuinely lost his wallet, or a buddy took it and deposited it in the area where found.

Never said he was poaching. But the wallet got there one way or the other. He could have lost while working as you say or while illegally trespassing. If he had permission to be working there when lost his wallet then he will be grateful you found it and will say so. That will be easy to check. If was trespassing he won't tell you but he will now know that you found his wallet on the land he had no business being on.

Honestly I would just mail the dang thing to him and let that be the end. Why is the answer to everything that happens get the Sheriff or game warden involved? They are just going to send his wallet to him. Paying him a visit or talking to him would do no good for because A-he was trespassing and wouldn't admit it. B-He was utility worker or working for LO during the off season lost his wallet, it does happen, then he will be appreciative and send you a thank you letter and maybe a check!

The title of the thread is "Poachers," not "Found a random wallet."

I have had 2 different companies do seismic surveys on my place and I have no wells or pipelines either and am only a few miles from there. Just because you don't have wells or pipe does not mean they haven't been there. The sad thing is, they don't have to have permission or they don't worry about permission.

And he will definitely get the message that you knew where he had been, if he was a poacher.
It would be a bummer to call in the law and then grandpa remember that might be the guy that repaired the fence, or ran off a cow, or whatever.
Whatever you do, take photos of the wallet and information that is in it. May be good info to have.

Bowtech, I'd also tend to take the more passive approach at this time. Provide the wallet to local authorities and let them determine if it makes it back to the rightful owner. Nothing good to come of an actual encounter with the possible owner since you didn't actually catch him out there. Never know what a "high wired" person is capable of when being personally confronted or perceived to being confronted about being on the land uninvited. At least, that's how I see it. Wouldn't want anything bad happening to you over a wallet...

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt, but first I'd do a little sideline investigating online, see what info might pop up on the internet about the guy. Then mail the wallet back to him with a letter, emphasizing how you're doing the right thing by returning his property, even tho baffled how it might have arrived at being on private property, you're sure there's a logical explanation, and conclude with grandpa 'frowns' on disrespectful trespassers, if encountered in the future. But then I'm pretty naive, and prefer to hope for the best in folks.

I'd turn it over to the local law and let their "chain of custody" routine deal with it and move on. There are only a couple of "facts, 1 you found the wallet, 2 you have the wallet. For all you know, it was taken in a burglary.

I think you have already spent way too much time thinking this thru. Toss it in the fire pit and be done with it. He has already replace everything in it anyways. If your still PO'd about it, drive to his house and challenge him to a fight, if he wins, he gets the wallet back.

How come everybody I meet is a deer hunting expert?

if there are deer tags missing, he should have logged on the back of the license what county and ranch he harvested the deer. May be able to give you a little more insight...

Do poacher's even bother with obtaining a hunting license? Anyway, if I find something that doesn't belong to me, even on our own property, I'm gonna give it to the SO and let them deal with it.

There's so many different variables, as to how that wallet got there, that you'll drive yourself silly trying to figure it out.
