SO question. I just got my book in and saw that at the end of September I can bow hunt deer in Sam Houston National forest. Do I need to check in somewhere or just drive to the spot on the map and walk in? What should I expect?
Thanks

I've hunted public land for years then decided to get a lease last year. I use to think public land was full of idiots who don't have respect and can't hunt. Well that's true for a deer lease as well but your paying money for it.. So.. Your first time out expect some idiots, expect to see hunters, expect a few confrontations. With that said you can find some great deer and places to hunt. Hunt during the week if you can Tuesday-Thursday. Oh and don't leave a stand up cuz someone will find it and steal it. Don't mark your trails or stand location either. Normally a local or a guy you moved in on and didn't know takes it. Sometimes you have to hunt the hunters.. I stay in the woods and sit just to see if any hunters are in area before I look for a set or hunt that area.
Have patience is the key and try to sneak in and out without hunters seeing you. If someone asked what you saw say nada! Don't talk about what you saw or where you hunt to anyone and don't post on interwebz and you be good to go.
Good luck man.

I have never hunted deer before in the SHNF but from what I can tell by the APH handbook is that you do not have to check in except for the 2 dates listed on the Legal game box where it says mandatory deer check in.
GO TRUMP!

Thanks for your help. I have a GPS that I can use to set points so I shouldnt have to mark things. I used to have a lease as well but with all of the traffic from other hunters on the lease I rarely saw anything so I figured hunting public land would be a lot cheaper. I read that most dont go in to far so as long as I am willing to hike more I should be able to get a good spot. I just assumed that you would have a check in so a public place would not be over crowded- but I will try the weekdays when I can. Thanks!

think you'll find. most out their wondering about the woods. are their for same reason as U. ta hunt. can't say about SHNF, years past, had ta check in, fill out form. survey, what ya see, bucks, does, hogs & such. last year was first time they done away with it, paper shortage. most public land, no ATV allowed except draw hunts. Pack out what pack in. if ya hunt from tree stand, combing stix work good for dragging deer or hog out, if your a runt like me, big squirrels. make a three point streatcher secure, & drag, hogs, i back pack. leaving hoof on quarters. best wishes, oh, if ya see bigfoot wondering about the woods, Don't Shoot & tell him i say hi, were like twins, except i got small feet
i'm postaddic

Oh and don't leave a stand up cuz someone will find it and steal it. Also because it's illegal to leave one up for more than 72 hours.
