This is our first year throwing out some milo (literally) - we disked a few small fields and seeded with milo & sunflowers. All of the baiting regulations speak of standard ag practices, field manipulation, etc. Can anyone shed some light on what the best approach is? Shred it all? 50%? Its a few acres and we saw a good amount of birds yesterday and even managed to shoot a few but it was just over the milo as it is - didn't do anything to it.
Want to make sure we are legal and getting the best out of the work we are doing to make it a better place to hunt.

Oh - I should add that we planted back in May - so its milo growing in the ground - NOT a bunch of seeds! That I already know is no bueno!

I would check with your local game warden for the correct answer. That way you have it directly from him/her as to what you can and can't do.

Large swaths cut through milo fields near me, either was day hunts or doveblaster as it sounded like a war zone. Report of gamewardens checking them and no problem with the large swaths. That being said, the swaths were baled after the milo was harvested so that would amount to "regular" agricultural purposes.

It is my understanding that if you plant something that Migratory Birds will feed on, you have to make some attempt to harvest it, like the above post, they harvested the Milo and bailed the stalks, you can't just plant a field of Milo and go out there and shred it all down and start hunting over it. Like STX said, i would ask my local game warden.

Shred strips. If you have dove in the area they will be there.

I have hunted with GW in fields done this way, so..... No different than shredding native sunflowers and hunting.

This comes directly from the Texas parks and wildlife link above.
"Food plots can also be planted to attract and provide food for doves. Planting desirable seed producing plants, such as sunflowers, milo and dove prozo millet in May will often produce productive dove fields. However, plots planted with native sunflower will germinate best when planted in fall. Food plots should be at least 25 acres in size and adequately fenced off from cattle. Shredding strips through food plots, beginning in mid August, will improve access to seed for doves and make it easier to locate harvested birds."
