Hello, I have a couple hunting rifles which I left at my parents home when I moved to the US a few yrs back; is anyone familiar with the requirements to bring them from Mexico? I found an ATF form for importing arms, but is it the same process to bring your own rifles, not for resale?
I'd forget about them since they are not high end rifles but I grew up with them and have sentimental value.
If anyone has any info or suggestions other than calling the ATF which I may end up doing I will appreciate it.
Thanks!

Not sure what the rules are. I'll talk to a buddy of mine who is from Canada. He was going to have a rifle shipped here to and may already know.

On a different note, I didn't think the Mexican government allowed its citizens to own guns. What are the rules, since you clearly have a couple?

Thanks for checking!
It is a really weird situation... you are allowed to have guns (hunting only, not assault type or those deemed to be of exclusive use by the armed forces), as long as they are registered with the local Army post; however... things are very very difficult now.
There are no stores that sell rifles, but you can buy/sell person to person; There are shooting clubs/ranges, and in order to transport your gun you have to have a permit, again issued by the Army. To be quite honest I would not venture to travel with a gun even with all required permits these days.
Some of these I bought ~25yrs back with money I saved as a kid, and other a present from my dad when I turned 12, a shining Remington 11-00 that saw much Dove action back in the day... So their value is more sentimental; I've started to buy some guns over here but always wanted to get the old ones back.
Anyway... like I said.. things are rough out there now.. so I want to be absolutey sure of every move I make with them to avoid problems.
Thanks again!

Happy ending to this old thread; Well finally found the time and b@lls to bring my old guns from my parent's home back in old Mexico; the agents at the border were a bit stumped as they normally deal with guns with proper paperwork for a temporary hunt in Mexico. These guns had been there since late 70's early 80's well before things were as crazy as they are now.
I have my early 80's Remi 1100, late 70's Marlin 336 in 30-30, a sporterized M1916 308 which i've found to be a Spanish Army surplus type rifle, and the greatest surprise a 22-250 I bought from a friends dad long time back which I never fired but kept in a closet, and turned out to be a Remi 788.
Disassembled and cleaned them all already, replaced a few springs and rings in the 1100; I'm ready for the hunting season to start!

Thanks! I still need to take it to the range to test it; probably replace the scope as well.

Good to hear. Those 788 are not the most pretty rifle in the world, but have a strong following, and really hold their value. My biggest gun sale regret was selling a 788 in .243 to a buddy for his kid. Really wish that gun was still in my collection.
