So I'm always hearing if you find water you'll find dove. But I've never hunted next to a pond or water for that sort. I usually just do some scouting the weekend before, then set up in a fly by lane. I want to try to hunt near water this season, but I am unsure on when to do it. So, do you hunt water in the am or pm?????

Typically in the PM, but last year opening morning I killed a limit in less than 20 minutes over a small tank.

Yes. Also water sources will help determine their flight patterns.

Late morning or evening. I did not even start last opening day till 8:10 am due to other commitments but was surprised, they did not fly to the water till about 8:30 but when they did it was lights out in 10 minutes then watched my buddy finish his limit in another 5 minutes. We sat on the back of the truck and watched 1,000 dove fly to water till about 9:30, needless to say I got a lot of sleep last season, no need to be there till about 8:30am. When it was cloudy they came to water later though.

X2 on the late morning. I still like a pond in the evening, but late morning hunting at a pond has produced well every year at our place.

I only ever hunt water. Don't have the fortune of a food field. Hunt water early morning and from about 5-sundown. I love hunting the water. We do great every year.

I read an article yeeeeears ago in one of the big outdoor magazines about this. They observed dove habits and found a pattern. Roost to field to water back to roost then again in the evening with the same pattern. Roost, field, water, back to roost. Since fields are pretty spread out and water is usually concentrated, sitting on water mid morning and late evening seems logical.

Hunted both AM and PM last year. Had to let a bunch of big groups fly by so just so we didn't limit out so quick.
