What changes in the weather do you look for that would cause you to believe that deer will be up and moving? What tips would you give a novice? I have 5 days of vacation, and want to take them when my son and I have the best chance at harvesting a buck.

For me it has always right before or during the rut with completely overcast cloud cover and temps in the mid to low 40's. If you can add a light drizzle. I hunt all day long on days like that over a food plot, driving around or rattling.

Temps in the 40-50 range, fog lifting around 8-9 am or light drizzle. I have seen a lot of mature bucks out later in the morning.

40's. So, I guess the odds are pretty slim that bucks will be moving around on bow season opening morning, September 27th in Hardin County.

You can always plan on as many trips together with your son as you can no matter what the weather is. That way the success will be in the time spent with him more than the taking of a deer on a hunt cheers If a deer is taken it will only add more memories to the time spent together.

Excellent point, stxranchman. We do hunt quite a bit together - once per week at least - for hogs. Although it never gets old, they've become easy prey. This is our first lease, and I'm really hoping for success. However, I can assure you that we'll spend so much time there that my wife will be upset with us!

Those cold days that it rains most the day then you get a few hour window of perfect calm weather before dark.... I can barely sit still on afternoons like that.

Where I hunt in E Tx, right after a hard rain or a long steady set in rain.
In Kansas, a hard cold Northwest wind!!

Just GO, and deal with whatever mother nature throws at you. It's all good. Some of my best fishing or hunting has been when conditions were supposed to be "poor" for that activity.

That being said, if I could CHOOSE my weather for hunting - it would be cool to cold, with a rain that had just stopped. I'm a firm believer that just after it stops raining, animals that have been hunkering down - get up, shake off their coats to get rid of the wet and fluff them up to catch more air, and walk around a bit.

What I've noticed is that deer are much like us. After two or three days of cold, over cast, and rainy weather. They jump at the first opportunity to soak up some rays and dry off with dry sunny weather.

Either during a stretch of hard frosts when that sun hits the plots and they start to thaw or anytime during a cold drizzle in the rut.
