Need some advice....

ballpark how much am i looking at for granite countertops...about 55 sq feet counter top, 10 square feet of backspalsh (assuming 5in), and 24 of edges...

any companies someone can recommend? North side of DFW airport...

I would look up txhntr on here. He does that type of stuff and does great work for a fair price. He lives up that way as well. If nothing else he can at least give you an idea of what you will spend. I can tell you the cooler and more rare the pattern the more expensive. Also the thickness will be a deciding factor.

Granite varies greatly depending on the color you select. Some as low as $30/ft up to $150/ft. Best thing to do is got to a place like IMC and pick a few colors. They have a large selection and depending on your selection, you can find the same style or something similar to fit your budget through other suppliers. Distributors typically will not give you a price but they should tell you the level of granite you chose. Lower numbers are cheaper.

Also, some people like 2cm and some like 3cm, so think about the thickness.

Most the edge designs do not change the price, but some do.

To change the countertop, the sink and faucets also come out. Some sinks cannot be reused, depending on material and mounting method. Make sure your sink can be reused, if not, a new sink will need to be included in the price. This is also a good time to change faucets if you want too. They have to be removed and replaced anyway, so the only increase in cost is for the new faucets, labor will be the same.

I would suggest also to replace the sink and get an underlaying sink especially if you plan to sell anytime in the next few yrs. They look much better and its what people want these days.

My understanding is price more is based on a combination of thickness, density, and then color. Basically, cr*p rock = cr*p countertops, cheap rock = cheap countertops, good rock = good countertops, very good rock = very good counter tops, etc...

Basically, buy cr*p, you end up with cr*p...buy good, get end up with good....seems to be a pretty price completive industry so you get what you pay for without a lot of BS added to the ticket.

We spent the lase 10 months gutting and updating a house built in '79/'80. We used a company from Waco to install (and had problems with them not understanding basic instructions [English])...we selected the rock from a wholesaler just south or Ft. Worth....love the finished produce...kind of annoyed with the installer miss-cutting/wasting so much of it.

Not necessarily true, but a lot of truth to it.

The price is driven by density, amount of quartz (hardness), thickness and color, but color is a large portion of the cost. Where the granite is derived from (country) also plays a part. Availability, consistency, patterns, veins, and other characteristics of the color drive the price as much as anything. Some of the common colors like Santa Cecilia are a good piece of rock for a good price. Doesn't make them any less durable or less of a product than one like typhoon bordeaux.

Is white/black/gray swirly looking granite at the high or low end of the price spectrum?

Is it patterned or "marbled"?

I've been in construction for 21 years and a month ago for the first time I saw a granite installed that was "leathered". It looked like it was peppered with a shotgun about 1 billion times, the granite dude said it was "vhherrryyy expennnnsssivvvve" (that's my best hispanic translation I could type). I scratched my head and wondered why would somebody want peppered granite and not the baby butt smooth form?

interesting about the leathered countertop!!! seems like that would be hard to keep clean & sanitary ...

no clue on cost ... just know that my daughter/son in law have it and it had to be sealed???

Just an opinion take it for what it's worth. If your gonna buy granite get a new undercount sink. And if your gonna buy granite get a nice tile backsplash done don't do the cheap 4" granite backsplash.

+1 here. I saw this kitchen and was dam impressed with his work. One mighty fine looking set up if you asked me!

Iv got 28+ colors @ $39.99 installed and we can get all of other colors as well but not for $39.99.

Sinks and back splashes too.

See if you can get scraps that match your specs. I was helping pick out granite and marble today at a warehouse. Almost got an entire place finished out with scraps alone. Saves a ton of money.
