I have been looking into getting a GSP for a while now, and since I'm no longer in an apartment, I think now is the time. Researching breeders is difficult when your not exactly sure what to look for and so I am wondering which breeders anyone has had good luck with, closer to North Texas would be nice but not a must. Thanks for the help.

Charlie rose at wildrose is a good breeder that knows his dogs.

Please don't take this wrong, but GSPs need some leg stretching room. So hopefully your new residence can provide your next hunting buddy that opportunity, if not you may want to try a different breed. As puppies they can destroy just about anything, and 'digger' is there middle name.

Uodibar Kennels John Rabidou also comes highly reccomended

I purposely waited until I was out of the apartment and had ample room for a GSP before obtaining one. I understand they are high energy dogs and I hope 12 acres will be enough room for them to play. This will not be my first interaction with a GSP.

Haley Killam - HK Kennels... they breed the Rabidou or "Uodibar"(Rabidou spelled backwards) lines.

Uodibar Kennels has a litter on the ground now.I'll be a getting a pup from this litter.
John and Susan have produced some great bird dogs from their kennel over the years.
As someone else mentioned, HK Kennels has some good stock. A buddy of mine
just got a pup from there a while ago.

Up in N. Tx, I would look into Ronnie Sales, not sure if he still has a website anymore.
Another place would be TGR Kennels in E. Tx.

Speak to as many people and ask as many questions about their dogs as you can.
Go see the parents working birds.
Lots of good GSP dogs in TX.

Are you looking for a pup, started, or finished dog? If a pup, then John Rabidou @ Uodibar kennels in Hondo, TX would be my #1 starting point.

What are you looking for in a shorthair; size, range, confirmation, gender, color preference, etc? What are you planning to do with the dog; uplands, water fowl, field trials, NAVHDA, or just a good ol hunting dog?

Insight into what you're looking for and how you plan to use the dog should be considered before throwing out kennel names and breeders by all the internet Einsteins.

I think this is good advice above. I understand now that there are different styles of GSP's out their. Good info to look into before purchase. Ask around.

1. A good ole hunting dog - A companion I can take Quail, Dove, & Duck hunting with me (each of which I am able to do every year)
2. Also a dog I can raise a family with
3. Looks do matter, but after 1&2 – Liver with heavy speckled (no solid white preferred)
4. Size – no preference
5. Gender - no preference

As far as lines, I'd recommend you look at Sharpshooter or something tightly bred with Hege Haus. Both will be tough to find in TX. However, it's not too difficult to get a pup sent to Texas.

Huntemupkennels.com in KS comes to mind. I bought a pup from Thunderhead GSPs back in Feb with similar lines. They are up in WI. I've been very pleased with her.

I've been messing with shorthairs for close to 30 years. There is no reason to settle on your pick. Several lines recommended in this thread are questionable based on what you're looking for.

Check out Rio Concho Kennels in San Angelo. David Eggar and Tommy Wisdom. They breed some very nice GSP's with lots of versatility.
