For those that hunt in the panhandle, do you have a preference on oats versus triticale? I will be sowing in an additional cereal grain to our wheat field to try and add diversity, and I was thinking one of these would be good. I want to stay away from clover, because cattle will be moved onto the field in February.

I would say triticale if using it for grazing.

Primary goal is deer feed, but has to be cattle tolerant for later in the winter. The fields are planted by landowner for our deer hunting, and he does the preparation of the field and the drilling of the seed. Considering the work he puts in for us, we try to choose vegetation that will not harm his cattle should he decide to put them on it in the spring.

I would prefer your thoughts on what would be best for the deer given our constraints.

I have seen it planted mainly for deer and then mainly for cattle grazing on separate ranches way south of you. Was not mixed with oats or wheat in those fields. The guys who planted it for deer said the deer had preferred it when they did some plot tests for themselves. I was on a Hill Country ranch that used to plant it in HF fields to keep deer off of it so they could use it for cattle grazing.

I would also call Turner Seed and get those guys feedback on it.

Thanks ranchman. If anybody has any other feedback, I would welcome it.

No problem. You might PM BOBO on here since he does some farming also and get his thoughts.

i would say triticale. in my opinion it does better in cold. we had some oats freeze out last year and we are further south and east of the panhandle.

Yes oats will freeze out if planted in the fall. Oats in our part of the world need to be planted in March or so to not freeze. Triticale, rye or winter wheat would be your best bet. Clover won't harm cattle once it has frozen but once it starts to green back up you have to get them off it pretty quick or they will start to bloat on it.

My place is Not quite in the Panhandle, but close enough. We plant triticale and Austrian winter peas. Turner Seed recommended them. The triticale is more tolerant to the cold as mentioned above.

Would definitely go with triticale over oats in the panhandle. Of the many years I did plant oats (alone and in blends) in the panhandle, I never had a single year when the oats did not freeze out. When planted alone, it left me with nothing but dirt in the plots at a critical time (mid to late winter). In blends, the oats would die out and just leave me with a much thinner plot of whatever I blended the oats with. Oats are definitely a good attraction plot, but in the panhandle it has never paid off for me due to the freezing / kill.

Thanks for all the insight. It looks like it will be triticale this year.

You can get cold tolerant varieties of oats also, just not sure I would pay the extra for them in your case.

Been trying for quite a few years in the NE Panhandle and the biggest factor, by far, is timely rain. Winter rye has become my mainstay but even that has not popped until the following spring these last few years. My cousin's husband who farms and ranches in Northern OK and southern Kansas mentioned triticale as a good cover crop (for cattle) so it sounds like a viable option. If there's not much ag around your place, I think you'll be fine with wheat, rye or triticale, again, assuming you get timely rains.
