The RGV “Wing & Water Weekend” is an event sponsored by the Challenged Sportsmen of America (CSA).
The event is a weekend of dove hunting, fishing, skeet shooting and camaraderie for physically challenged sportsmen, women, and children. Each mobility-challenged hunter is encouraged to bring one able-bodied family member or friend along to join the fun. This has always been a “family focused event” with challenged hunters sometimes being afforded the opportunity of hunting with their sons & daughters for the very first time. Some of the younger disabled members bring their dads or moms for the hunt.
Affordability is a great obstacle for people who are under-employed or unemployed, which is the case for many of our challenged hunters. We provide hotel accommodations (as needed), all meals, hunting and fishing sites, and physical assistance for the weekend. When necessary we provide airfare and a handicapped accessible van or gas money for those in need of transportation assistance.
The entire weekend is provided free of charge to all participants. All events are free of charge without regard to physical handicap, race, color, sex, age, religion, or national origin of guests and volunteers.
-----------------------------------------------------
The weekend will start with out of town guests checking-in at the Victoria Palms Resort in Donna, Texas on Friday afternoon. At 6:30 p.m. local and out-of-town hunters will gather up at the Victoria Palms Ballroom for registration, a social hour and catered dinner to kick-off a weekend of fun. Boy Scouts will lend a hand wherever needed.
Saturday morning the fishermen will have breakfast provided and leave the hotel by 6:00 a.m.. Volunteers will be along for the fishing. A little later, another group will have breakfast and head out to the skeet range. Volunteers will be there to help out, too.
Saturday’s lunch will be served at the site of the morning activities. After lunch, hunters and fishermen will rest in their rooms or gather in the Victoria Palms Ballroom to swap tall tales, catch-up with old friends and make a few new ones.
After receiving their group assignments and the mandatory safety briefing, the hunters will be led out to their assigned hunting site in small groups by the CSA RGV Volunteers. Dove hunting begins as soon as the hunters are in place and ammunition has been distributed. Our volunteers will serve as birdboys and help out in any way they can. At sundown, the hunting will cease, the participants will gather their birds up and return to the hotel. Volunteers will be at the gate to collect the birds where they will be dressed and sealed in bags for distribution to the hunters.
Saturday night’s feast will be provided by a local caterer. The RGV Volunteers will be there again, to lend their many hands wherever needed. After an evening of swapping tales and stories of the “ones that got away”, the out-of-towners will return to their rooms and the locals will head for home for a night of well deserved rest.
Sunday morning starts with a Mexican Fiesta Brunch at the Victoria Palms Ballroom. Hunters will be led out to their hunt site beginning around 3pm and hunting ceases at sundown. Then it’s back to the hotel ballroom for another catered dinner. After a few more hours of fun and laughter, everyone has to say their good-nights and good-byes for another year.
Some of the hunters will leave after dinner and some will stay at the hotel and head home on Monday morning. The RGV Volunteers will make sure everyone is on their way home safely.
The events of the CSA RGV Wing & Water Weekend will be spread out over Hidalgo, Cameron, and Willacy counties of the Rio Grande Valley. The hunting sites will depend on the weather and “where the birds are” so we will have commitments from landowners for multiple locations.
When: The 18th Annual RGV Wing & Water weekend is usually held the 2nd weekend of October. Call (956) 994-8800 or email RGVCSA@yahoo.com for more info.
