Look at this buck and give me your guesses on age. I'm thinking he 3-3.5, but I suck at aging in the summer.

Not looking for an excuse to shoot - I have and older, bigger 8pt that will be top of the list if he shows.

Hard to tell from those pics, do you have any in the day?

Based on those pics alone, I would say he is middle aged, 3-4 for a low fence deer, leaning toward 4 because of the big pot belly and rump size, although he may just be a very full 3 yo, his snout is awfully pointy.

BTW, I think I see why the varmint cage is all broken up smile

I notice that you have the same experience that I have on the varmint cages.

Older than 3 for sure. Too much brisket, belly, and shoulder. Has the front end of a 4 yo and face of a 5 yo imo.

At first glance he looks younger. After looking he could be older. Not all mature deer are butter ball fat arses, im thinking this is a good example of a mature free range buck that doesn't get as much protein as his stomach desires.

I don't see him as older. I don't see any extra skin, no "ruffles" around his ears, he has a long pointy snout, his neck is too long, and his legs don't show age with knobby knees and the shortened leg appearance that older bucks have. I see a healthy 3-4 yo buck.

Help me out and tell me what is giving you guys the opinion this is an older buck. I am not trying to give any flack, just trying to learn what you guys see.

Has a low set to his hoofs and his whole bone structure just looks like an older deer. Also has a very deep jaw line.. I wouldn't argue with 4 but im thinking 5. His neck seems long just because they all will be like that this time of year... he will start showing his age once rut is getting closer and he starts putting on more muscle.

This ^^^^^^^^
He has way to much brisket and shoulder muscle for a young deer. His brisket is below his elbow joint on his legs. If he was 2 or 3 that would make the other buck with him only 1 or 2. He looks twice the size of the other buck. I would call him 4 minimum based of the size of his hock pad for the summertime, it not the shape and size of a 5 yr old. I would not be surprised if he looks 5 in Oct though.

His front legs seem big in comparison to hind legs with some muscling, looks like callous or the beginnings of callous knees, has a brisket. And while its not a big saggy gut, its not the stomach line of a young buck.
