Can anyone recommend a good outfitter/guide in Texas for a mountain lion hunt. I know there are a lot out of state, but I'm looking for in state only.

Thanks

Some day I'll be looking for the same. There's only a handful that do it, from what I understand.

Yea, it's a challenge to find one. The reason I want it from Texas is I will never be able to take one of all North American big game, but I might be able to do Texas, maybe minus desert bighorn.

Put your 10 bucks in every year in the TPW draw hunt, like I do, and avoid "negative waves". (In other words, think positive.)

I know the odds aren't great, but if you want one, you gotta try.

If someone doesn't pipe up here in a while, PM me and I can email a couple of ranchers in west Texas and ask if they know of someone who handles problem cats. Maybe they outfit for hunters too.

Check with the TPWD biologists in West Texas. I know numbers of trapped and killed lions are way up. Also PM Gary Roberson on here he would be a great source of names of ranches and he might even be able to put you on a lion hunt.

Yep. I have the same goal, although I have every intention of drawing that bighorn hunt.

Sneaky I hope you draw the cat tag, although I suspect you will hit one in the truck 1st. BUT if you draw, I know an old ornery fella that could tote the backpack! up

He was talking about the desert bighorn draw. You don't need a tag for lion. There's not even a season. TPWD doesn't classify them as a game animal. TPWD just asks that you notify them after a sighting or kill so they can collect data.

I would contact Mulie Mike on this forum. The places that he hunts should have plenty of cats. Never hurts to ask.

Yeah don't know what I was thinking, meant to put bighorn, not cat

You offering the pack mule service? I wouldn't turn that down.

I'd go just to see, but I'm betting you will hit one in your truck before you draw the tag.

Fine by me. Just don't expect any roadside pictures when it happens.

I know of a couple of ranches that are selling lion hunts in the Trans Pecos region. They are priced pretty high but do afford good housing, food and will allow you to come back if you don't catch on the first trip. Joe and I are furnishing dogs on a couple of operations and if you can hold off a few months, hope to have several more large ranches available.
Adios,
Gary

Thanks for the reply!
I'm not in a hurry. If you don't mind, could you PM me when you can with price ranges and hunt descriptions.

Call Alpine Saddlery and ask for Tony Dungee. He knows everyone around there and probably knows a couple of good ones. There was a guy out there named Rocky, don't know his last name, that several people I know have gone with. They all got a cat.

Tye Vick out of Van Horn is well known for his pack of hounds and success rates in that area of the state. He has his own ranches he hunts but I'm working with him on a few of my ranches I am having some problem cats with and will hopefully be offering a few hunts soon.

This week on CARNIVORE, we will be hunting lions near Kalispell, MT with Larry Anderson. Larry has one of my pups that has turned into a lion hunting legend before reaching a year of age. I hope that you will have a chance to tune in and like us on facebook at carnivoretv.
This is some of the prettiest country in all of North America. It is ashamed that the re-introduction of the wolf has greatly impacted wildlife and hunting in that area.
Thanks and Adios,
Gary
