Always a good read for learning the details on hunting-related accidents and deaths. Link

And they may be nearby.........

"Victim was in the top of the tree when he fired at something, then fell 15 feet to the ground, impaling himself with the barrel of the rifle." Ouch
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Honestly I am surprised there are not more based on some of the things I have seen.
There was a thread here on drinking while hunting one time and about half of the guys responding did it and were proud of it.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

The limit should be 0.00 for driving or having a firearm.

I agree not everyone is responsible enough to drink and hunt but with the group I'm with we don't have any problems. Some people aren't responsible enough to have a gun while they are sober. You can't lump everyone together no matter what the issue is! Just like all HFs aren't the same all people aren't the same!

Yep, you are more likely to be injured while hunting than you are to be injured by a hog, mountain lion, or bear - combined. This one really bothers me... Victim was struck by shooter on adjacent property Prevention was given as knowing where others are positioned at all times. That just isn't possible when people are on other properties and are not part of your hunting party.

I wonder how many of these have a lot of hunting experience? With the way the hunter safety course has cut the hours requirements will these become more prevalent?

As stupid as these are, it looks like accidents have gone way down in the last ten years or so.

If you read the summary near the beginning of each accident report, you'll learn that alcohol IS NOT a contributing factor in the majority of accidents. Not to lessen the seriousness of the topic, I can remember when a hunter admitted not taking a shot because he was "too hung over."
IMO, accidents are far more likely when a person is sober and just ignores what they know is not a safe practice.
As I have commented so many times before, if you simply wait until you are on stand to chamber a round, and always empty the chamber before you leave, you will avoid the vast majority of situations in which shooting related accidents occur.

Teach them young and they'll have a little more respect for firearms. It's the old guys that never used a gun I worry about sometimes.
15-year old victim was carelessly handling and twirling his cousin’s .22 cal. handgun, brought on the trip to plink with. Shooter thought the gun was unloaded and twirled and “fired the gun like a cowboy.” The muzzle was pointed towards his abdomen at the time of discharge. Victim was driven to an ambulance and care-flighted to a nearby hospital.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.
