I have been out of the game for a little while. Whats going on with ammo as far as prices? Now that we have backed out of Afghanistan is .223 dropping? What about 9mm and 40cal? I remember pre Afghanistan being able to get 1000 rounds for $163.00 (reloaded). You think we will ever go back to that?

... You think we will ever go back to that? I do not think so.... Me either, it was higher than $160, before the "hysteria". I had bought 1000 rnds fed reloads for $300 something just prior to the last craze.

Prices won't come back down. Too many variables on the costs of components to make the rounds, this will continue to be problematic IE: primers, bullets, powder, etc... and I believe they have seen what the market will bear and that people seem willing to pay higher prices. "Why come back down?" I believe this may be the manufacturers mind set as long as supply and demand dictate. Or should I say retailers mind set because many manufactures seem to be putting ammo out at reasonable prices, I think the wholesalers and retailers are possibly putting more mark-up on it.

I'm not so sure that prices won't come back to where they were. An overdemand situation like we've gone through usually eventually leads to an oversupply situation. It isn't like all that ammo that got bought got used. There's a real good chance that once people are convinced that ammo is available and they have satisfied their stockpiling needs, the massive amount of ammo and components still being produced will have a reduced market. Then we get oversupply. That's what I do expect, though only time will tell.

That's the issue. The republicans spend so much effort tearing each other down during the primary season they make everyone of them easy targets for the dems in the final election. Pick a good one and get behind them and quit fracturing the voter base.

Pick a good one and get behind them and quit fracturing the voter base. The problem is the republican party is trying to be like three parties in one. You have the corporate rich folk part of the party, the super religious part of the party, and the libertarians. It's hard to reconcile these groups with one candidate. The rich folk don't really like the libertarians, the libertarians don't really like the religious folks, and the religious folks don't really like anyone who isn't as zealous as they are. It's hard to reconcile all of these groups with one candidate, so you end up with generic white bread like Mitt Romney, who can't pull independents in. As the republican party stands today, it's hard to see independents and right leaning democrats flipping unless given a better choice than they've been given recently. Reagan had the ability to pull in those independents and democrats, mainly because he was far more populist than any republican is today. It's hard to get elected when you have to swing so hard to the right to get the nomination, then swing far back to the middle in the general election.

Well that got outta hand quick... Lol... Back to bullets. Eventually some manufacturer will sell them cheap and the price will drop. Guess the only question now is: who knows where the best deal is at the moment?

When it does, I hope I'm not broke. Me too. I nay have pulled money out of savings to get bulk components in the past. I may do it again if I have to.

Buy in the lull periods between panic periods. I approach the whole situation with the attitude of it's generally not going to get any cheaper than it is now.
The time to buy is NOW, not when the sheep freak out. That's what drives pricing.
Don't be part of the problem.

Guys, The problem is the gun owners! I've read a lot about the government/Obama is responsible for the shortage and to a point it's true, he is responsible...but not in the way people usually think. He's responsible because of the fear gun owners have that he will take our rights from us and then the old rumor that the government will control guns by controlling ammo...not...at least not now. It sounds like there are two main factors, when Obama was elected fear drove people to purchase who hadn't owned guns before...and they need ammo. And then there are the gun nuts....the guys that hoard ammo. They camp out at stores waiting for them to open and buy everything they can get their hands on, same with reloaders...ugh! If we want costs to come down hoarders need to stop hoarding and just buy what you use...allow the market to restock the shelves and then costs will stabilize/come down. Here is a link that presents some of this...from the NRA. http://www.nraila.org/news-issues/issues/ammunition.aspx

If the prices of raw materials stay high, ammo might become more readily available but it won't drop much in price.

One man's view of hoarding is another man's common sense stock of ammo. When something is on sale, I've been known to stock up with a couple of extras because I knew that I would use it eventually.
The current ammo shortage isn't because of the scalpers - they flip it as fast as they can to get their profit. It isn't hard core hoarders either - they had their needs met way, way before the panic.
It's the average American gun owner - plus the new shooters, as already pointed out. Sure, some are nervous, but who wouldn't be if you see what's going on around us. BUT, finally, that vacuum is starting to get filled and we are seeing the availability improving.
To me, an ammo supply is like people who don't have a little emergency supply of food, water, generator, batteries, duct tape, tarps, fuel, first aid, medications etc. Then, when a hurricane/tornado/blizzard/earthquake hits, they run around panicking about the availability. The scalpers go into high gear and everyone gets upset.
This country operates on a very fast, but fragile supply chain. Having some extra supplies is just common sense - not hoarding. I'm finding .22lr at Walmart for $.05, .223/55gr Federal for $.39, etc - so I buy a spare box or two when I have the cash. Overall, I am seeing about a 12%-15% increase above Fall of 2012 when the panic started. It may come down, but......... look at food and fuel!
Each person has a different definition threshold of hoarding vs. being prepared for an emergency. Is 500 rounds too much? Is it 5,000 rounds, or 50,0000? That's what I meant in my first sentence..........
Marc

A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.
