How good would one of these be for a full time day and night hunting scope?

If anyone had one to tell you for sure, it would be nice. Theoretically, it should be fairly awesome. The only real downside to night use is that the digital night vision right now that is currently being used requires IR illumination akin to about what a Gen II traditional night vision scope would need.

The downside to daytime use is that it isn't likely to be as good as a normal optical day scope, though it may have a fine picture. Even with some magnification, your distance is still going to be limited by pixel resolution.

The reality is that you should be able to see further, in either day or night, than you are likely to be trying to shoot animals. I wish I still had the link, but Bearclaw did a poll here for NV shooters as to their NV kills and most (80% or so, IIRC) were inside 100 yards, and only a small percentage were beyond 150 yards. I haven't seen a poll on this for daylight hunters, but I would be willing to guess that the averages don't move out too much more than an additional 100 yards. Most people generally don't hunt at longer distances.

So the X-sight would be a bit of a compromise. If the NV portion of anything akin to the Pulsar Digisight, you could potentially be making 300 yard night shots with the right illuminator and certainly shots to 200 yards. I would assume its daytime capabilities to be at least out to 400 yards as a maximum reasonable range. So you would have a scope that could do day and night within the ranges that most people hunt and that would not be ruined by exposure to daylight (such as is the case with traditional NV) and have it as a nominal price.

The only problem is that they aren't out yet and nobody in the general public really knows what they are capable of doing...including me and I have one ordered. They are way behind schedule. Supposedly, the 5x models will be out this month and the 3x versions will follow in July.

If I was in your shoes, I would wait and see how things turn out as it should all be hitting the market very soon. You can bet that those of us here that already have them on order will be posting our impressions and results.

I have been holding off buy a new NV for the ATN x-sight but don't think I am going to wait much longer before I go to the Photon.

They were due out several times already. ATN has not been forthcoming.

I would not expect too much for that price.

No, you probably would not, but if it works as advertised, it will likely capture a large segment of the market. People who never would own NV will be buying it because it isn't just night vision, but day/night vision. It will be an entry market game changer if it isn't vaporware.

Yes, in number of units sold it actually could become the Big Kahuna Burger.

Can these be mounted on a 30.06 or .308?

Supposedly they can hold the recoil of a 308 and such. Again since they are not out yet, no one really knows what they "can really do"

Big Mac maybe...little better than standard cheeseburger but no Roy-al burger.

EDIT: I have been waiting to check one out.
I've been pretty pleased with the Photon 5X mounted on my backup 6.8.
It's introduced quite a few of my buddies to night hunting.

I'm trying to decide if I should go ahead with the Photon or wait for this one. Don't really need the daytime use, I'd use it on a dedicated night rifle. I'm not letting hogs ruin deer season this year......One way or another, they MUST DIE!!!

That n750 in the classifieds is the best deal in nightvision right now, I don't know the guy or the condition of the scope but I can tell you that it is worth the 500 extra dollars at 1k he is asking.

Otherwise wait another few months for us Beta testers, I mean consumers, to try out the X-sight and report back the results.

It won't have to go much to outsell the Photon. There just haven't been many produced for sale in the U.S.and the 5X has been discontinued for awhile now. To me, it has been a missed opportunity for Sightmark as there is basically no competition at that price point. There won't be anything comparable to the X-Sight either at its price point. It may well push the N750 very hard being roughly half its price and alledgedly having superior features.

Flip side, upgraded models of the Photon and N750 are said to be on the way. We'll see.... up

I love my photon I was pushed into it because xsight dream seems to never come true. So I'll keep killing with my crappy photon and let the xsight pipe dreams continue. I really don't believe they can get it to work right with all the features that they claimed. Id put money on October when they are up and running and have enough in stock to buy em straight from the supplier.

Team photon..........

Love my 5X Photon with doubler and UNV 20IR. It's a lot of scope for the money. Can't wait to check out the X-Sight...

I am going to try and get a straight answer from ATN. I am really interested in this scope. From what I hear, it will come with a nice illuminator. If it is half as good as everyone thinks, it will be one nice optic. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

You go ahead and try to get a "straight answer" from ATN. That is like getting a straight answer from Congress. Several of us have gotten "straight answers," and they don't materialize.

A lot of us are very interested as well and have pending orders. Errrrrr.

At this point, it is vaporware until proven otherwise as they have repeatedly missed promised release dates.

They are on track to start shipping pre-orders in 2 or 3 weeks. I just ordered mine and estimated shipping date is end of August due to all the pre orders.

Double Naught Spy, do you have a pending order from the ATN website or through a retailer/online dealer? I talked with the Regional Sales Manager today that is in charge of corporate accounts and he assured me that they will be shipping out in the next 2 weeks (pre-orders from their website). If you order through Cabela's website, we have been assured they will ship within one or two weeks from today (prior orders get priority). This is for the 5-18X Model. The 3-12X model will not ship for a while. I was told today that September is looking like the best delivery on them with August being possible.
