How many of you have used OSB instead of plywood ,and how long did it last after you put paint on it? OSB is cheaper than plywood that's why im asking.

Exterior OSB will last longer then plywood or roofing OSB

Keeping it painted and sealed is the secret to making any of it last.

Im not a fan of osb.

I have my doubts about OSB too. It's much cheaper than plywood that's why im giving it thought, but in the long run the plywood will be better.

If you cover the seams put a good roof on it and paint it well and keep it painted either of them will last a long time.

If you build either of them leave exposed corners and window cuts, hit it with some cammo rattle can neither will likely make it past 2 years.

Consider using HardiBoard. It will be a little heavier but will outlast plywood or OSB by a long shot. I'll never go back to plywood again, the price will be in the same ballpark too.

Love hardi myself, but is more expensive heavier and more difficult to work with.

I asked this question a couple weeks ago on the Tff. I'm going with OSB. Roll paint all the surfaces with exterior latex seal the corners good and you will be good to go.

I have two with OSB sides and plywood bottoms that have a good roof, sealed well, and roller painted that are both going on 5-6 years with no issues at all. Look pretty much like they did the day we put them up.

I have built 5 all with OSB sides & metal roof with either 2x6's or sub flooring plywood for the floor, First one was built in 2007 and still strong & solid. I did give each & every one a very good painting before they were put in the woods.

Nowadays I use T111 siding for my blinds. Thin plywood works fine too, as long as you keep paint on it, and paint the edges.

I used plywood on all of my stands, painted them well and closed in windows. One lasted nearly 20 years before Rita put a tree through it. My current stand is 8 years old and still solid. I don't like OSB.

My favorite stand is made out of 3/8's plywood. I got the plywood free, it is old real estate for sale signs off ranch properties and is laminated with plastic. I painted it one time and calked all the seams back in 1999 when I put it out and have never done a single other thing to it. This year it will replace one of out other stands and at 15 years old it is as good as the day we built it.

I used osb on my last stand. Even with painting both sides and the cut ends, the bottom has started to rot

I too have never had any luck with OSB even after keeping up with painting it, don't like OSB & haven't used it in a long time on a deer blind. I'm painting deer blinds this weekend (plywood). Damn wood peckers are killing me. Even though hardi board is heavy & a pain to work with, I am considering using it in the future.

They are the main reason I switched to hardiboard or some material they can't peck a hole into over 15 yrs ago now.

We also find far fewer yellow jackets in the hardi board blinds than the wood ones. They just don't seem to like them as much.

Same here! I just made sure the water could drain off the outside.....Used the "Oops" paint from Lowe's & Home Depot and put a thick coat on every year. I did put some flashing over the top of the windows for gutters which were angled a bit and put silicone behind before screwing them on. Window are on the outside & open out & up so that rain doesn't get on the window sills. So far, so good

I used the OSB "Smartside" panel for a stand last year. Silicone seal in the gaps, and a double coat of paint on all exposed edges and the screw holes. It seems to be holding up really well. This is it before putting it out on the lease.

Would lookee there at them WHEELS !!!

What a neat idea...with some solid spoke 20" dirt bike wheels with big arsed lag bolts run thru the hub and into solid wood ...you could drag that sucker most anywhere...and another pair mounted at the other end ...aka top corners you could turn it into a 4x4 Blind and push it along by your self like a mini giant shipping container box... Just sayin

THANK YOU SIR for the great idea and Pics

I have to confess, the wheels were only for moving out of the barn and to the trailer. I used two long pipes across the narrow ends with 1 1/2" conduit brackets so 4 people can carry to get it on/off the trailer and move in the woods.

We always use OSB, and make sure the wax side is out. Prime well before painting. Water penetration usually occurs at the corners and window bases. Use "U" channel siliconed in for windows, and L channel for the sides. Silicone the top of the L channels real well. And make sure your roof overhang is at least 3 inches. I"ll touch up the exterior walls about every 3 years with fresh paint as needed.
