Just put down a deposit for my first dog, a German Shorthair. I will mostly use him for quail, duck, and shed hunting, but also want a fishing buddy and dog to have around the house. I thought a lot about getting a lab, but I wanted something with a better nose and everyone I know has a dang lab.

What are yall's thoughts on the breed? Any advice?

Also, I'll be living in the Houston area so if anyone knows a good trainer please post their info or PM me.

If you want him to retrieve work on building his drive right away. down a hallway so he can't go anywhere but back to you. Mine is at 7 months and has a great drive, working on building his nose now. Great dogs.

Really good GSPs are easy to find. If it come from a well bred litter, it should not be a probably getting it to do all of the things you listed. Good choice, just let the pup be a put and don't put too much pressure on the young pup. Exposure for the first few months to a year.

They are great all around dogs. My was just as much at home on the boat as he was in the pheasant fields. Sure do miss him.
