So I went out to LBJ today and scouted around for about 4 hours. Saw quite a few deer and tons of deer signs, but was scouting for turkey. Called and called with no answer. Finally saw two as I was driving and that was it. Does anyone ever hunt this and if so where is a good spot to find a bird?

Wow. Really? Great move callin to birds before season. Should season the
birds nicely and they will fall in ur lap come opening day.
And so many wonder why a fishin honey hole gets fished out with boats all
over it in one day.
Blue's Clue's- get a clue.

Wow way to be a jackass. Thanks for the tips. Have you ever scouted before? Kinda have to throw out a few calls to get a gobble find where they roost and hunt them. You realize how big LBJ is? Not like you're going to go out on opening day find a spot sit down and get a bird. You're a dummy. Get a clue blue.

Why Ike, whateva do u mean?...I know-lets have a spelling contest.
Forgive me for being a little terse. But do watch your mouth on here. No cussin.
Get there early or go late and listen to them gobble on roost. Its not that hard.
All u are doing is adding to the number of hunters to same public wma everytime
you mention a spot. Guess you like competition. Good luck to u and be safe

You could also try a shock call during the daytime instead, like a hawk whistle or a crow call.

He came across wrong but I agree with him. All you're doing is educating them to hunters. In Kentucky it was illegal to call with turkey calls pre-season. It also doesn't interfere with the mating season. Turkey season is set towards the end of mating season to ensure better chances of good numbers of hatches.

I've been going to LBJ for the past few years since we have a lake house down there.

What grasslands were you scouting? I'd love to check them out myself.

Pigpen just don't reply to any of my posts please. Thanks. Anyway I was all around yesterday saw a lot of deer and a couple birds I don't know the area well enough to tell you where I was exactly I need to get a map. I'm not a rookie turkey hunter I have been hunting my whole life, but in Nebraska so Texas hunting is new to me and I just want some tips is all.

No thanks. You cussed me and now your telling me what i can and cant do. I will quit talkin if you quit calling to birds before season. Everyone will thank you and make for a more quality experience. You prob worked tons of birds in nebraska. You should do fine. Dont know if you were hunting eastern nebraska for easterns or western for merriams/rios. Hunt accordingly for species. Be alert as other hunters will prob be moving in on the same gobbling bird.

Lol. Ok i thought ur earlier post stated you are not a rookie turkey hunter and you
have been hunting your whole life.Dont know if ur joking or not. Cover as much different
areas before sat as u can. Always hav 4-5 different spots
lined out as most of them will hav a truck at them before
u get there. Waiting till the last minute to scout and getting
familiar with a new area isnt the best. Maybe look at this spring
season as more of a scouting mission instead of a hunt and get to know the layout
of things. U wil be very dissapointed if ur expectations
are real high for your first hunt out there.

You don't understand sarcasm do you? I've bagged over 20 birds in my life. Not a rookie whatsoever. Just new to the Texas public hunting. Sure i can go to private land but i like finding them. Thanks for all your help though

I didn't know LBJ really had hunting grounds. I've never public hunted in Texas just because I always lease my properties, but I don't think I'll be getting a turkey lease this season due to fishing. frown

Anyways Swampy, shoot me a PM and maybe we can figure out the best LBJ lands to hunt for each other. I'm interested in going down there soon if the grounds are good!

I meant to say this exact thing in my own words earlier. The arguing should not have been posted, but it's over now.

Lets get back to finding good turkey grounds for this season!

Swampy, I recall that there have been quite a few discussions about Caddo LBJ Grasslands hunting over the years here on the forum, including what would probably be helpful info for you.

Go to the search feature here on the forum, select the Turkey Hunting forum for your seacrch, plug in a keyword like "caddo", set it to show searches newer than 5 years,, and you should find some good stuff to help you. Good luck

Lbj has tons of birds remember a real caller will mimic the hen and use calling methods others seem to not use especially on Lbj every Pro!! Hunter that yelps, clucks or locate calls educates birds. I have had tons of luck with the soft purrs and whistle. My main tactic is to just whistle for them..its a great tactic that others forget and the whistle is like a calm feeding bird keeping track of the others or locating the group
