Look into Vortex.

Here's one on the lower end of their options. Spend as much as you can on optics. You do get what you pay for in most cases.

A little less expensive but still a Vortex http://swfa.com/Vortex-3-9x40-Crossfire-II-Rifle-Scope-P51736.aspx. I'm considering getting the rimfire version for a 22 rifle that's on the way.

for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I have 2 of the 3 x 9 x 50 Prostaffs with the BDC, Not bad for the money they cost. Decent glass and not too bad in low light conditions.

Don't overlook Bushnell. They're putting out some good glass these days at not bad prices.

This is an excellent reccomendation.

I would also suggest looking into the Redfield Revolution as well.
