Made the drive up to Cushing, Texas this weekend to try to take a couple of Red Hinds from Gladesgator's ranch. First of all let me say a very big thank you to Rick. He has a BEAUTIFUL place and a very well maintained and thought out design for a game ranch. Very nice herds of Axis, Blackbuck, Red Deer, and Whitetail. Day one, Friday evening, saw us in the blind and had numerous blackbuck and whitetail all over us but no red hinds to be seen. We saw them and the stags while driving through the ranch on our way to the stand but none while there. Day two dawned with us in the blind again with blackbuck, whitetail, and a nice axis buck in the foodplot but once again, the hinds eluded us. after a mid day break we were back at it in the rain and spent the majority of the afternoon just trying to stay dry from the rain blowing into the blind and nothing much to look at but the ever present blackbucks. about an hour before sunset, 7 axis does walked out at the far end of the foodplot and started working their way to us but peeled off into the woods before they got close. All the time they were walking our way, we kept hearing an axis buck roaring and we could tell he was getting closer. About 30 minutes before sunset, 2 axis bucks walked out on different sides of the foodplot and one of them started working his way to us and our hind hunt quickly became an axis hunt for my wifes 40th birthday present. As he got closer, Rick said "that's the same old dude who was in here this morning". Anyway he works closer and closer and I told my wife to get ready and get the barrel out the window. I was manning the video camera as he got within 100 yards and turned broadside. I whispered "hammer him" The .30-06 of Melissa's barked, he jumped and kicked, ran about 75 yards or so and piled up just into the edge of the woods. He ended up with a 27" and a 26" horns, lots of mass nasty ole velvet hangin everywhere. Tipped the scales at about 275 pounds While he is not the biggest axis ever taken, he is very respectable, and is a trophy for Melissa and it is the 1st horned animal that she has ever taken. I do not think I have ever seen anyone so excited and happy about taking an animal. At midnight last night when she finally went to bed, she was still smiling like she just discovered teeth!!! I am very happy for and proud of her. I cannot thank Rick enough for his hospitality, and willingness to do whatever it took to make our weekend comfortable and successful. We will be back Rick and feel like we have made a friend for life!! Cant wait to get back with my two oldest daughters.

Tell your wife WAY TO GO. Awesome looking Axis. Looks like he has some nice mass to his antlers. I enjoy watching my wife and kids shoot stuff more then i do theses days. Plus i cant get any trigger time in with them around. Always nice to find a place where it feels like family. Sure makes a hunting trip a lot better.

Kevin,
Thank you for all of your kind comments, happy that you and Melissa enjoyed your time here. I certainly enjoyed having you both here, look forward to having you return to the WTF Ranch.
Yes, Melissa was the most excited (after a great shot) person that I have ever seen, life time memories for all. Can't wait to see pictures of it on her wall.
The way that buck walked out of the rainy mist was quite a sight.
