Will Feral Hog's feed on a dead Feral Hog? #4982171 02/19/14 06:56 PM

After I shoot a hog I drag it 30-40 yards to some thick brush. Works out great cause the coyotes and buzzards eat them up in 2-3 days.

What's interesting is that I ALWAYS have pigs at the feeder the next night. There must be 50 coyotes feeding on a stinky carcass 30 yards away, and I have pigs on camera eating corn. Just wondering if they come to the smell, the coyote/buzzard activity or if they are coming to feed on the carcass?

Any insight?

They may feed on the carcass, but that does not mean that they will feed on a carcass. It certainly does happen, but isn't a given, in other words.

Maybe they are just coming for the corn.

I used to think corn, but I notice different pigs showing the night after a kill. Pigs I never saw on camera before. Makes me think they are coming to investigate or feed on the dead animal.

Hogs are creatures of opportunity. They will eat darn near anything if they are hungry enough including carrion.

We shot three hogs on our place in Llano and drug them to the pasture to see if anything would eat on them and they laid there for two weeks and the only thing touched on all three was the eyes. Anybody know why that is? We have plenty of coyotes we see them all the time and hear them.

I bet if you had drug them to the edge of a tree line they would have been gone overnight.

Gut pit at our place was full of whitetail, axis, pigs, Yotes, carcasses etc. While dropping of a couple of axis and WT carcasses, we were overcome with about 30 pigs in the gut pile, having a feast on their deceased brethren. So I guess the answer is yes.

Buzzards eat the eyes first. Sounds like y'all don't have coyotes.

I guess I didn't read your whole post before I decided to give my unabashed opinion. So you DO have coyotes but they don't eat the pigs? scratch

I agree with this. I think pigs prefer food that grows from the ground or falls from trees and I suspect that fat, healthy pigs with plenty to eat will turn their noses up at a hog carcass.

That new pigs are showing up on the game camera after a kill is interesting. It's just a guess, but the OP may have pushed the sounder that he killed from out of the area and a new one filled the void.

Pigs will surely eat guts! A buddy of mine processes show chickens and dumps the guts in his gut pile at the ranch... to the tune of 4-5 55 gal drums at a time and the hogs will eat it up in a week. Not saying it is their preference or making them out to be zombie pigs, but if its there they will eat it.

Some pigs can have an acquired taste for blood and meat. More than one farmer has been found dead with only the feet left in his boots because the pigs ate the rest of him.

I've often put a game cam on dead hogs and deer. So far, I've seen everything but hogs show up.

Oh c'mon now... That's ridiculous - they would eat the feet too! They can split open boots.

I think remember seeing somewhere where someone had trained pigs to attack and kill.

Not a big deal. You have a bunch of penned up animals and you somehow get killed or die with them and they are hungry, they will eat you. Hogs are omnivores. They do eat meat. They do not need to acquire a taste for it, LOL. Like bears and raccoons, it may not be their primary food, but that doesn't mean it is anything special when they do eat it.

I guess a lot depends on the food source in the area; We've tossed out 300 pound pigs and nothing was left but a skull and a few bones in a week and we've tossed out white tail guts and nothing touched him in a month. Pigs are also migratory so if nothing is touched it just means there weren't any in the area or found something else to gorge on.

My friend shot a doe bow hunting and let it sit for a hour before retrieving it and found pigs eating the face off of it. The one thing that is predictable on pigs is they are un-predictable. confused2
