Guys are always asking what caliber one needs for killing a deer or big hog. Here is a .243, 100 grain Winchester at 55 yards. Devastated this big boar, quartering in & breaking front right shoulder, gutted the vitals, and stopped behind the left 1.5 inch guard plate. Not a pass-through, but this hog was quickly listed in the D.O.A. column. Though I do not agree with going much smaller in caliber, I'm dead-set on the .243 for medium size critters. This big hog still ran 75 yards, they are tough. I know, should of been a head shot. (shot by a yankee friend of mine!)

With the right bullet and placement .243 will kill any deer/elk/hog in the world.

22 long rifle will drop a hog with correct placement--but I need a little leeway so I go with a 3006

Are you serious???

A high speed projectile contacted living tissue and it actually caused the death of that host??
That is just crazy talk.... confused2

I like my 22-250 but any rifle that you can put it in the right place every time is the best. I like to shoot everything in the neck but kids have shoulder shot with it and worked just fine.

.308 and .243 for me. Cheaper ammo, easy to find and easy recoil.

I'll stick with my Weatherby's, with that said I've killed a ton of critters with a 243. On deer size game Mrs. B probably has more experience with a 243 than I do so I'll share that. Her first year with the 243 she dropped two bucks in their tracks with neck shots, one doe with a shoulder shot and it went about 60 tards. Second year I buck with a shoulder shot and it went over 150 yards, one doe with a neck shot and again in it's tracks. Year 3 we went after elk so moved her up to a 7mm08, one shot in the heart lung on a 3 year old bull and he went less than 50 yards, two shoulder shots on bucks and they both dropped in their tracks. She is now a fan of the 7mm08 as am I, when it comes to a medium sized all around caliber the little 7mm is hard to beat. I left out the hogs she shot because those were all head shoots. Our 243's have been pushed back to varmint level and with probably remain there, I'll never use another one on deer and Mrs. B is sold on the 7mm08.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

243 is plenty of gun for deer. But the 300 wby does it in style!

Heck ive done my fair share of hunting with a 223 and never felt undergunned with some handloaded partitions.

whatever you feel comfortable with is usually the one to go out with. I have killed a deer with a 410 before.

What's the advantage of the 7-08 over the 243?

Shot placement is everything. Still I like a heavier bullet on a big whitetail. Just personal preference.

Actually, Hooper, the 7mm08 is a couple bumps up from the .243. Bigger lead, more powder, harder stats but yet easy on the shoulder. Both are sweet calibers.

PLACEMENT IS KEY, BUT THE BULLET NEEDS TO BE UP TO THE TASK AS WELL.

243 is an awesome caliber. Took down a 300# pig this year with a 85 grain deer bullet. Pig went 20 yards on the death squeal and piled up. Tikka T-3 Stainless Lite. Hornady ammo. Still love my .270 Browning though.

40-75 grains in bullet weight, more ft-lbs, thats why I used the shoulder shots as an example.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.
