Putting feelers out there for anybody that might want to get their dogs some work over wild birds next weekend. I've got 630 acres near Ballinger with some quail I'd like to hunt. PM if interested and we can talk details.

Do it on here. I'm open next weekend I can bring Cracker and my hunting rig. We can hunt 4 from my Gator. An afternoon and a morning would work out fine for a road trip. Dinner is on me. We can hunt a section in a day.

That's all the dogs we need. Now we can start the PMs.

Can't compete with the pro bird hunters here but if you want to go with somebody who does not care if you shoot them down to half dozen and has some old dogs that like to hear a shotgun go off, I'm available anytime on short notice.

I will contact on Monday. I've got 5-6 hunters. We are not real experienced quail hunters, just want to shoot a few and watch some dogs work. We have owned the ranch for five years and never hunted the quail. This year we have more than ever. Conservatively I would say I have seen 8 different covies of 10-30 birds. I will post more details Monday and contact some interested parties. Thanks.

I'm out. Something came up. Sounds as if it could be a fun weekend.

Your probably going to have to let the ones putting the dogs on the ground set the rules, for them to feel comfortable doing it.

Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden.
Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

Yeah... That's why I said we aren't interested in shooting a ton.

If you are pretty sure you got the covey count and size right I doubt you could hurt them with a weekend hunt especially if you don't let anybody shoot a bird that is not pointed. My experience with inexperienced quail hunters is lots of shooting and not much to show for it. The ones who go with me have a hard time hitting pen birds and a big covey of wild birds would fluster lots of us at this point!
The last good year we had in Texas we left more birds than we ever had and the next year they were all but gone. I will never forget a February afternoon hunt that year when we got in the biggest covey either of us had ever seen. When we got them up they flew straight into a bottom so thick single work was impossible. It was getting kind of late so we quit and while we were cleaning our birds the covey started getting back together and there were so many whistling we could not count them then either. We were just amazed at how many birds were in that pasture and all the way home to Arkansas we talked about how we could not wait for next year. If my fading memory is correct, we killed one bird in that great pasture the next year.
Enjoy them while you got them. Mother Nature can wipe them out but you won't hurt them so long as you hunt over a dog like a gentleman.
