I haven't heard anything good about them, if you want a semi and your dead set on a Remington I'd go with the 11-87 or an 1100 if you can find one. otherwise follow the "B" rule!

I went the Remington 11-87 route one time...Bought a Benelli M2 the next season.
They just dont make today's Remingtons like they used to.
If you build it, they will come

I have been in the market for a semi auto for a while. I shot the Super Vinci, Versa max, A400, SBE II and the SX3. I ended up getting the Super Vinci. All functioned fine, the Vinci just felt better to me.

Any one use one? Good, bad & ugly? Saw, held one the other day and really liked it. I've got an 870 now and would like to get a semi. If you like the Benelli M4, you will like the VersaMax. It's the same shotgun... Like to the point that there are interchangeable parts. I'm not sure I fully understand why Bennelli hasn't sporterized the M4, but Remington went ahead and did it for them when the ARGO patent expired. A few years ago I would have been siding with the gallery about "B Guns", but if you want a VersaMax and you like the way it fits and points then I'm not sure there is a real reason for you to avoid it. We're far enough from the intro date for the pattern of major problems to have been addressed and, while I agree that today's Remington is "not your daddy's Remington", the company remains full service and if you are having an issue with your VersaMax they will eventually fix it or replace it. What it boils down to for me is that Remington has rolled out a really cool concept for an auto-adjusting, gas-operated shotgun that eats recoil impulse for breakfast - even if the design is borrowed - at a price point that is far more attractive than many of the B guns and comes with a top-of-the-pile warranty. That said, I'm still a little skittish of Remington since they found a way to bollocks up the production of the 870 and haven't fully forgiven them... So buyer beware - within reason. Handle a Franchi Affinity as well as long as you're past the "B" section.

I have one that I've been using for over a year. It has been a great gun, and my only complaint is ever so often you have to tighten the front grip, but they sent me a fix to that, just haven't put it on yet.

I can attest to the full service of the company, as I had to send in my 11-87 within 4 months of purchasing. They replaced it good as new and havent had a problem since. But I didnt like the idea of having to keep telling myself, "if it breaks again, they'll just fix it".
If you build it, they will come

I hunt with an 1187 and really like. No issues here. IMO - nice gun for the capital required.

This is an anecdote, but I've been really impressed with a friend's 11-87 that hunts exclusively over salt water on the coast. That thing has been horrendously abused, is no longer blued but now "redded" and doesn't really seem to get cleaned until it starts blowing powder back into the shooter's face... But it somehow hasn't died and seems to shoot and cycle as well as it ever did.

Been shooting Benelli for 14 years now and I've never had one single issue. I have 3 friends that have had issues with Versamax's.
Live to hunt, hunt to live.

I don't know Much about the versa max but the 1187 Is junk. My buddy and my dad both hate theirs. If you want one that bad let me know. They both want to buy a benelli super Vinci and I'm sure they would sell what they have . I shoot a benelli and love mine.

I just did not (in no uncertain terms) like the feel of it. To each their own. I hope you kill a ton of birds with it.

No offense taken, sir. Just adding my $.02 As long as birds fall from the sky, that's all that matters. I would love the opportunity to shoot a B just for comparison sake. One of my buddies shoots one, so next time we are out I may take a stab at it.
btw - I've had this 1187 for 8+ years, so maybe it predates Remington's issues?

Every gun has or had issues, just go to the big box stores' online reviews. I own several brands but like my VersaMax the best. Yes, it had initial issues and they got it fixed. How many benelli's out there have their chock tubes stuck in the barrel? Or how many Nova's have had their stock pad fall off? They too have fixed these problems for the most part.
I am about to buy the Performance Shop SBE II....just because I can and I admit to being a "gun whore" (my feeling is they are just as good investments as stocks and I can actually use them!). I own 2 Vinci's, Winchester SX3, Remington 1187 and have the Maxus and new A5 on order. Of course I have some older 1100, Model 12 and Browning Sweet 16 (old A5). Not stating to brag, stating to show you I have experience with many brands/styles of shotguns.
I will tell you this, I never had a problem with any of my guns as long as I kept them clean. My dad put thousands of rounds through his 870 and a few years ago he finally broke the firing pin (he never cleaned it, ever!). He never cleaned his A5 either (which is mine now) and it never failed him.
Moral of the story is to go with what feels good to you and stay away from the sub $700 semi autos. And, I will admit that of all the semi's I have listed, the 1187 is probably the cheapest made, but the VersaMax is not in this league. Best value to me is M2 for 3" shells and VersaMax for 3.5" shells. My 2 pennies.
Biggest Con for inertia drive systems is the recoil and biggest Con for gas is the dirtiness.

Have made 3 hunts with my new Versamax, love it. Extremely smooth and as said earlier, eats recoil. Great price performer. I bought the Sportsman model at Academy. 28", all synthetic and a single modified choke, $699.

Most of the new reviews are very good. Seems like they have a majority of all the problems addressed.

There is a reason it's $699 because Remington can't command the money beretta and bernelli can. Remington us struggling to sell them due to the bad press and having to pull them off the market. Then they have to give a big warranty to persuade buyers.
Get a "b" gun. I vote Beretta. My Extrema 2 has never jammed once and gets cleaned once during the split.

Me and both of my sons have been shooting the Versa Max for 3 years now. My oldest is now in the Marine Corp so his gun is not getting shot much, occasionally we shoot it. The other two we hunt most weekends and shoot skeet 1 to 2 times a week with them. Thousands of rounds shot through these guns and no problems. Would buy another with no hesitation. Anyone that has shot one while were skeet shooting likes it. I have compared it personally to the SBE and for 2 reasons I like the Vmax better. First it has less recoil than the SBE and second it will consistently cycle lighter loads than the SBE. It will cycle everytime whatever you put in it. No other gun out there that can say that and actually do it.I guess I should be a little more clear, I do not really consider the forearm nut coming loose a problem because of the reliability of this gun. Buy it you will not regret it. one more thing there is a brand new 20 ga Beretta that my buddys daughter shoots most weekends and even though thats a great gun it will not cycle the light loads.

There is no full VersaMax out there for $700 except the Sportsman edition. They take a few things off of it to make it cheaper. No different than Benelli with the Stoeger brand. The Stoeger 3500 is the same gun as the SBE II, but with some cheaper parts. The inertia bolt is the EXACT same. Or you can buy the 3000 that is only 3" just like the M2. Remington chose to offer a lower price model in its own brand while Benelli chose to do it in the Stoeger brand.
Again, I am just trying to help keep the facts straight. The B's and VersaMax are all good/great guns and will malfunction if not taken care of.
