Looking for some advice on a shotgun for my 13 ,soon to be 14 year old son. He is 5'2 and is a little shy of a 100lbs, if that helps. He currently shoots a 20ga Mossberg pump. He wants a 12 gauge, pump, camo......I would like to stay around $400 or less. This will be used for dove and some ducks etc.. Thanks in advance, Lance

Every American should own at least one Rem 870. It's built to run, and perfect for a youngster that may or may not take care of it. I still have the same one I got when I was 15.

Last year or the year before I read an ad speaking on Reminton's custom shop. I saw them engraving the reciever of an 870. I thought "why in the world would they be engraving an 870?" After reading further it was serial number 10,000,000 (if memory serves) and was going in their museum!
Every American shold own one. Looks like many of us do.

Hard to argue against an 870.

A semi auto would be much friendlier on his shoulder.

No double taps with a pump, and less ammo usage with a pump. Safer for a kid, in my opinion.

I like an older 870, they just seem smoother than a new one. Could be just me.

I've been meaning to get rid of my 870 Express Magnum for about 10 years, but I just can't do it. I've been shooting that thing since the early 90s and it won't wear out, it just keeps wearing in.
For a 5'2" pre-teen, I highly recommend the Hogue short stock with the 12" LOP. It's about $50 on Amazon, about $70 for the set with the matching forearm.

Lance, the Benelli Nova's are nice as well. Our son has been one using one for quite some time now. He loves his.

The 870 is a great shotgun, especially an 870 Wingmaster, but if he shoots a Mossberg today, what is wrong with another Mossberg? He is already familiar with the position of the safety and slide release on the Mossberg.

I got my 870 Express for Christmas when I was about 14, I thought it was the greatest thing that ever existed, and im still fond of it today. It cycles so smooth, and never has any problems.

I have owned many 870s and the only thing I have had to do was polish the chambers. I do it on all of them now. The cheap bulk loads can get down right sticky if you dont. I also agree with he is familiar with the mossy why not stay with a mossy. They are great guns too. I have one in 410 and it is fun to shoot.

Mossberg has a youth shotgun that would be cheaper but the 870 would be perfect imo.. or a women's model 1100

if he wants a 12 gauge get him an auto.
a 870 is gonna put a stomping on him
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Every hunter needs to enjoy the thrill of a pump shotgun. Later as he matures and would appreciate, consider the automatic. Just my opinion..

a 870 is gonna put a stomping on him A good duck load will at least get his attention. My son is 14 yo, 5'9", 138 lbs., so quite a bit bigger than the OP's. He wanted to know what the difference was between the shells, so he fired a 3" duck load off while we were out at the lease. It didn't hurt him, but it got his attention and he could tell the difference from that and the 2.75" dove loads... and this was with a Beretta A300 Outlander.
