It allows you to precisely control the neck tension on the bullet. Some FL dies or standard neck dies will over size the neck on cases that have thick necks. Plus, if you have a wild cat round that you are sizing up or down, you can get the exact neck tension you need. I run specific neck bushings for my 308 Win, 300 Win Mag, and 260 Rem dies. Everything else is standard FL dies.

Not a dumb question. The purpose of bushing dies is to give a reloader more control over how much they're sizing the neck of the case down. A standard die will do it to SAAMI specs. This is typically sizing it down more than is required for precision shooting and optimum case life. Enter the bushing dies. With the bushing dies, you can measure the outside diameter of your loaded round, then you buy a bushing that is several thousandths under that... most of the guys I know run -.002, and voila. If you wanted more neck tension, then you could go with a smaller bushing.
So here's an example... my 6XC rounds measure out at .271 loaded outside diameter... my neck die has a .269 bushing.
They offer the bushing dies in both neck-only and full-length resizing dies.

Ok thanks you explained it perfect, but when do you decide when to get another size or when not to purchase a smaller size
