Sometime in the last 2 months we had an oryx get onto our place. The deer have pretty much kept there distance if he's in sight. I'm assuming that if I want to shoot him I'd have to have a permit. Does anyone have any info on getting a permit, fees, etc...? Looks like he either broke his horns off or just deformed. So my first thought was that someone would have a hard time selling him and just turned it loose. Any help would be appreciated.

If I were you, I'd just have somebody come in and trap him for you. Should put some extra money in your pocket.

You won't be able to get a permit unless you have a managed, reproducing herd. Your only legal option is to trap.

Time in a Federal prison could result from the option. There are several people from MN, that found that out the hard way, one just two months before the timber wolf was delisted.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

Oryx now protected cant shoot unless you have a herd of them and can only take I think 10%. Have to have 10 to harvst 1. Most likey someone who had it thinking they were going to sell it just opened the gate and said 'shoo' after the govt made it ilegal to shoot........Call GW......

I would call the game warden. They have the authority to approve special situations, and you may get a cool trophy out of it.

Game wardens have no authority when it comes to the Federal Endangered Species Act. It's strictly USFWS, they aren't going to make an exception, when trap and move is an option.

Problem with felonies is they send you to full man love prison, the same as the child molesters, drug dealers and murderers.
Problem come out a changed man, and experience enough bad things against your will that you'll be changed forever mentally.
Plus you can't vote, or own a gun.

This is precisely the problem with the ESA applied to privately held animals outside their home range. From a state standpoint, they don't want that non- native animal establishing themselves without a way to manage it (frankly the Feds don't either, but their hands are tied by a law passed by congress). You are now basically stuck with an invasive species that you have no practical way of controlling (and there is no doubt there will be more free range scimitars as fences age and escapees are 100% protected).
Expand that concern to the fact that there are several common exotics that could easily be petitioned for listing under the ESA (this is the anti's next step), and you could have a real problem. Imagine having something like aoudad that could not be harvested free range.
