I hunt near Edna, TX. Where do people around here buy protein? And what kind are you using?

Any local feed store should have it. Just go with whats cheapest imo. Never had a problem with record rack

Thanks
we haven't protein fed before. Just getting all my ducks in a row before I start. From what I've read I should wait till after the season to start. Or do you think I should just go ahead and set up our feeders and start getting them used to the protein?

Its just another food source right now.. id start in January to help your bucks recover from rut. Most will tell you to feed all year and it is a good thing if you can afford it but id just feed late January to august

How much do you plan to feed and on how many acres? Do you know many deer you have on the place?

Well we have a lot of acreage(about 4000) but not much cover. The majority of it is agricultural land. I was planning on starting with two 300# feeders in two separate locations and seeing how the take to it.
We have never had a deer count on the property just because there aren't very many. We waterfowl hunt mainly, deer hunting takes second stage.

How much protein do you go through on average per year?

It will help for sure. That would be a good start but if they take to it quick which they should you could add a good bit of them with that much land no matter the cover. Id invest in feed pens also... bound to be pigs if you have water and agriculture land. Make sure to put them in areas that don't get much traffic from your waterfowl hunts.. Tractors and regular ranch traffic isn't as bad since its a day to day process and they grow accustom to it. If you want them to find it faster id feed corn around the feeders for a bit and they will do the rest

oh yeah we have a serious pig problem. Having a helicopter come in after deer season. Any particular brand of feeders? I was think about ordering a few of the All Seasons red label feeders. Will probably look to start in January with a 50/50 mix of corn/protein then slowly up the protein as they eat it down

check at the feed store and see if they carry any type of goat feed. My in-laws raise boer goats. We started checking the labels on the bags and most of them run 18 - 22% protien. Yep, you definitly have pigs down there! We duck hunt next to Tivoli. Pigs are everywhere.

Last weekend I was duck hunting and had a 200+ pound boar tear through the pond about 100 yards away...he was throwing up spray 10ft in the air. wish I had a slug or buckshot but that would be illegal I assume

laid out a pile of record rack with a pile of corn 1st week of the season. corn gone first day, record rack took over a week. pulled the camera and it was actually foxes eating the expensive record rack and the deer ate the corn.
my deer like corn better and i'm not trying to grow any more horns right now, just attract them. might as well spend $6 a bag instead of $16.
