I really wish people would just learn that there are different sub-species of Zebra, instead of saying they're "clean".....which suggests there is something wrong with a Zebra having shadow stripes. There is NOTHING wrong with a Zebra having shadow stripes....it's a different sub-species!!
Here's a brief rundown:
Grant's Zebra - these have wide "clean" stripes, like one in the OP's post.
Burchell's Zebra - these have wide stripes as well, but with shadow stripes in between on the back portion of their body.
Grevy's Zebra - these have very thin, narrow stripes.
There are other varieties as well....but this pretty much covers everything we have in Texas.
Sorry....I'm not picking on you Dustin. It's just a pet peeve of mine. The Burchell's Zebra really gets a bad rap here in Texas because it "looks dirty". It's a shame in my opinion.

Wade you know the difference between a Grevy's and a Bruchells/Chapmans/Grants?
It's like a raven and a crow.
It's a Grevy's if it is standing in the pasture, but it becomes a Chapmans/Grants/Burchells when your standing gutting it.

The Grevy's Zebra is listed as threatened on the USFWS list.
