I found a great deal on a yak hunt. Curious for those of you that have hunted the animals are they like hunting domestic cows or can it actually be a hunt?

Also how is the meat and about how much meat do you get from a good size bull?

I just watched a video of a Yak Hunt on you Tube. It was like hunting in a Petting Zoo

Yea, thats what I thought it could be like as they are very easy to make into a domesticated animal from what I have heard

That's probably because the ones in the United States are a domestic animal.

Not knocking them, they are beautiful and if you got one in Canada or the northern states they would have wonderful hair.

Your Taxidermist will charge top dollar, as they have more wool and hair than a bison does.

I have heard repeatedly that they have super beef.

I have Yaks on my ranch, yes they are like hunting a Watusi, or a Longhorn. Their meat is really good I think it better than beef.

The meat is good. It is on a local Nepalese restaurant's menu and I have had it several times. That said, I can't imagine it being that challenging, they are raised domestically with similar amounts of handling as cattle, so tough to see them being that wary of humans.

They will darn near lick you to death. Mongols, Nepalese, Kazhaks, Tajiks, and Kyrgiz treat them like family.

I don't personally think I could shoot one, kind of like shooting a Saint Bernhard of the bovine world.

Love them though, and I think they would be a beautiful mount.

If we lived somep place really cold, I wouldn't mind raising a few.

That does look like a neat trophy in the photo.

May as well hunt them with a knife to make it somewhat of a challenge

Ive shot one and it was mean and not tame but it all depends on how they are taking care of. Most are not wild but mine was for some reason as to the only reason I decided to make it a fun bow hunt.

I hear ya. You two boys have forever scared me away from there. I was looking for an elk hunt and was talking to them. Glad I went elsewhere. My elk hunt is this weekend. Photos and details of the hunt will follow.

Yea I would do the hunt with a bow, but the more I look into it and read about how easy they are to domesticate, it does just seem like shooting a pet and that is just not what I want to do.

I dont know the name of the ranch as I found the hunt through a booking agent and had not enquired about the name of the ranch yet. It was only 1,200 and near San Antonio.

The meat is excelent and it can be made as fun and hard as you wanted it. Mine was fun do to him being spooky and i did it all spot and stalk with my bow. If he would have just stood there i wouldnt have done it.

Exactly, this is one of those deals where you

If they interest you, and you can live with how the hunt turns out then go shoot one.

If you don't care about the hunt, think they are an interesting trophy and are doing it for the meat go shoot one.

Don't go shoot one then complain about how lousy the hunt was.
