we also dont drive cars without air conditioning anymore, or watch black and white tv, or do a million other things we, well, yall, did 50 years ago...should we be ashamed of all this too?
If I send my neighbors a text and ask them to give me feedback on my lawn and plant rye into a giant dong pattern, I'm probably going to get some less than positive feedback. Same goes here.

Shot my first deer when I was 14 years old. Sitting in an oak tree overlooking a creek bed. Had to climb that tree. No fancy stand or steps then to get onto the Y shaped branch where I sat. Was there for hours waiting for a deer to shoot. Fell asleep (lucky I didn't fall out of the tree)and was awakened by an 8 point 75 yards away. Heavily brushed area. No shooting lane as we have today. Deer stepped into a small opening in the brush and all I could see was his front legs. Took aim, shot him through both knees. He dropped to the ground and I shot him in the neck. Those days are long gone for me. I hunt out of a box blind over a feeder now. One of my conveniences now that I own my own hunting property.

Yep i really dont care for the feeders very much myself but we do feed all year long .....mostly to keep them healthy if there is lake of other food sources . I dont hunt on a feeder duing the season but maybe a few times to get a doe if i am not seeing any just cruising by I guess you can pin what has become of hunting on the baby boomer generation (my generation). My Dad grew up during the depression and he hunted for food and taught us kids that you don't waste shells or waste food that you kill. Leases were simple and cheap if you even had to pay and a lot of people hunted by permission. Deer populations weren't what they are today and many areas of the state didn't have deer nowhere! Ever hear of the screw worm that was erradicated back in the 60's? That was when the deer populations began to recover and were to soon explode statewide. So you see us baby boomers pretty much started the trend and now most of us have all the comforts of home and plenty of toys to go along with it. Sorry to say there ain't no turning back so if I'm responsible I apologize!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Who is to say what the "correct" way to hunt is? I grew up hunting in West Texas and we would walk the rimrocks and throw rocks down into canyons and glass the deer that came out and decide what we wanted to shoot. We also did a lot of driving in a jeep and glassing from high points. Now I hunt in the Hill COuntry and these methods are out the window just because of the terrain and the limited amount of land that I can lease to hunt on. I would need a couple of thousand acres for just myself to go "to" the deer rather than waiting for them to "come" to me. I enjoy sitting in a tree stand or a blind and watching the day come alive. I enjoy the cold spells and watching bucks chase does and seeing the vapor rise into the air after a buck makes a run at a doe. I like the sun dipping behind the horizon and glassing until my eyes burn to try to find the big buck that I know is out there. I enjoy the buck outfoxing me and watching him turn away and fade into the twilight knowing that tomorrow brings another chance. I enjoy backing up to the fire and warming my backside while we are all telling what we saw and what we did not see during the morning hunt. I enjoy watching the squirrels racing through the trees and warning me that I am not supposed to be there. I enjoy all of this, so don't bother telling me that the way I hunt is wrong. I did not ask for it and more importantly, not you or anyone else is going to change my mind.

Practice doesn’t make perfect.

Funny how things have changed...my first deer feeder was cut up apples pitched on the ground or hung off of limbs...heck I don't even remember how that idea came about...then it was a wooden coke cola crate (case) with some corn poured in it...50 pound bag last the whole season...my first blind was always on the ground...2 X 4 s nailed across some trees in a triangle with burlap feed sacks stabled on them...floor was an old wooden pallet...usually sat on a bucket or just stood...I did scout my area very well and usually had a deer down on opening morning...before these luxuries I hunted oak thickets and either sat on the ground or just eased around looking and listening...I am pretty crippled up now and don't hunt much but I do enjoy sitting with my boy and grandson in a homemade blind...we still don't have an automatic feeder but have used an elevated bucket with a slit cut in it that the deer can poke or lick the corn that will then come out...BTW don't wear camo or paint our faces or use scent blocker...to each his/her own I reckon...

Still there was a little  behind your post. The "oh my god the acorns are falling my season is over" guys crack me up.

I agree with the op...I have feeders and box stands to take my kids in because they move around some. I mainly just bowhunt now and I scout for the best oaks with the most sign like you mentioned and put my climber off the trail with tracks going both ways. When I used to be on a lease I had my own area that was about 100 acres and I would use these methods there in my own area. Oh and don't forget rub lines!

I for the life of me cannot understand the almost universal trend to text, watch the game, read emails, or do anything on a cell phone while hunting-especially bow hunting.

I do mine the "old fashion" way. Just drive around the pasture in the feed truck until I see a deer.
