Killed this 4 footer on Easter weekend when we were out coyote calling. Stretched, scraped, salted, and cured with glycerin/rubbing alcohol. Turned out really darn good. Now I've just gotta find myself a good looking board to put it on. If I would have known curing snake skins was this easy I would have been doing this a lot longer and have a heck of a lot of skins by now lol.

Nice job CLW. Where do you get the glycerin and how much do you use on a skin like that? Do you mix the alcohol and glycerin, or use one, then the other?

You can pick up glycerin at Walmart. Sometimes its out on the regular shelves and some keep it behind the pharmacy counter. I mix it 50/50 and apply one coat at a time. Probably 4-5 coats waiting each time until the previous coat dries before applying the next.

I have been using non-iodized salt with a single brush of antifreeze at the end

Looks good. I used to use the Snake Tan from Maverick Trading years ago. Not sure if they are still in business or not. It was really good and could re-use the unused portions left over.

I never realized it was that easy. Do you salt it first or afterwards?

Salt it after you've stretched and scraped it. I don't know that salting it is absolutely necessary, I just figured it couldn't hurt.

Been skinning and mounting snakes since my first coral snake nearly 30 years ago. I have never scraped the skin. I always used Diazinon (ant poison)to cure the skin. Kept the bugs off. I will have to try the method above. I think that rattle bug skin will look best on a nice old piece of barn wood.

Thanks for the tanning recipe, I have been looking for one that is simple and tested. I have 3 diamond backs in my freezer which I will apply your method. A friend of mine knows a guy that will mount them on gun slings. Thanks again CLW!

lglidewell-heck unfortunately I wont be in this area too much longer. Graduate in about two weeks and will probably be going back south of SA. But if you'd really like me to I'd do it for no more than expense of the glycerin/alcohol.

CenTex-thats my thoughts exactly. I think I have a few pieces at my parents I am going to try and make work next time I make it home.

Navasot-My location is listed as CS, but it was killed back near my parents house about an hour south of SA. Sorry, didn't mention that in the op.

As a disclaimer (haha) - I don't have extended experience with this method other than friends that have used it and one that I did about a year ago that still looks just like it did when it was killed. I can't exactly vouch for the longevity of the cure but it seems to work great from what I've done.

Looks great! I got a rattler skin in the freezer that I want to do that with as well. When you stretch it do you just use small nails to secure it?
