While looking up other information, I came across red wattle hogs. What is interesting is that the recognized breeds (Wengler Red "Waddle," Timberline, etc.) are descended from feral red wattle hogs discovered in east Texas (1970s), captured, bred into particular breeds. The domestic varieties can be huge, 600-800 lbs with some over 1200 lbs.

Has anybody successfully hunted feral red wattle hogs? I can't find much in the way of information on the feral variety, but I would be interested in knowing more about them if you have successfully hunted or trapped any.

Here are some links...

I know that it's bad luck not to shoot a red hog or a spotted hog...

Well yeah. The pics in the links I provided are to the breeder's breed, not to the original feral stock. I am interested in seeing if anyone has shot or trapped any of the feral variety from which the breed was originally taken.

Now if anyone has gotten any of the formal breed gone feral, that would be interesting as well. However, I am not finding too many reports of 600-1200+ feral hogs being taken, much less ones with wattles. Giant hogs often are apt to make the news or show up on the internet, but am not finding anything.

I've never heard of them or seen one. I would not expect however that they would reach 600+ pounds as feral pigs. As I read it, they can get that big as domestics. It just doesn't seem like it would be very common that one would have the continual buffet required to reach that weight in the wild, but I suppose it is possible in some areas.

Well, apparently trappers have found them multiple times in the wild and turned them domesticated anew. I had gotten a mulefooted hog a couple of years ago. Unique variants are interesting to me. I would like a chance to at least see a red wattle hog, but I am now thinking this isn't likely.

I just got some pics of a few leaving my feeder that were waddling? Does that count?

Never seen or heard of it. One of the links said it was on the endangered species list. Therefore, does that make it illegal to hunt?

No. From Wiki...
Quote:
Named for its red color and distinctive wattles, it is on the critically endangered list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Wattle

The ALBC is not CITES. ALBC's concern is for the domestic breeds, not the feral variety. Domestic Red Wattle hogs are sold for food and considered quite tasty. ALBC is concerned that the breed could be lost.
