Already posted this in another section but figured it would be beneficial here too. I need a little help guys. A yellow lab litter hit the ground 2 weeks ago from my breeder and I have originally chosen a male. This would be my first dog of my own to use for hunting. Ive had 2 labs but only as house dogs and the female i have now i truly enjoy. I've been hearing from a lot of friends to switch and get a female and I will be happier. I've hunted with both males and females and have seen the good and bad of both. What are your thoughts and experiences with each? The dog will be a duck dog

I've been hearing from a lot of friends to switch and get a female and I will be happier. I've hunted with both males and females and have seen the good and bad of both. They should not say that, it is personal preference. My personal preference is a female, I just like their demeanor more and I also don’t want to look at a guy dog’s junk and trying to hump everything.

I've had both and the girls (that I have had) seem not to be as hard headed. Maybe it was just a coincidence, but my last 3 have been girls, and I have been happy. I also prefer a smaller dog too which tends to lean more towards the female.

I've found that females tend to learn faster. Everyone has their own techniques/tricks for training their dogs. With my way, I've had good luck with both, it just seems that females pick it up a little faster. I think females bond with males a little more. That "daddy’s little girl thing" I know our male would listen to my wife more that he would listen to me. Our female now, is never more than 3 feet away from me at anytime. Either way, Male or Female, you won’t be disappointed.
We interrupt this marriage for hunting season.

I like females. I can't stand males pissing on everything and my dads male seems a lot more hard headed than my female. And yea they do like to hump everything too.

Ha that pic is hilarious! I'm just torn. I've never had a boy dog and I know it will be extra work to break them of the humping/peeing habit. I just want a dog focused on hunting and not the need to piss all over my blind or hump a duck after he gets it

I personally like females better because I use my kayak to duck hunt and they generally are smaller and calmer and fit in the yak better.
