Well, was going to stay home this weekend since I have been on the road 5 out of the last 6 weekends hunting and fishing. But my LO texted me and says there are a lot of axis and turkeys milling about - which immediately gave me a bad case of dead-arse on the job. What the heck, the yard can wait another week and I still need some axis for freezer.

I love being a single empty-nester, makes the last-minute decisions to take off real easy. smile Took out the fishing rods and threw the rifle and shotgun in the truck - my hunting pack is always ready to go. Wrote a long status report email to my boss, and by the time he reads it I'll already be on the road. smile

Nice Good Luck. I have to put my hunts way out on the calendar so she doesnt freak when I leave for a week. When I packed up in February for the Mouflon and Fallow I went on You would have thought that was the first time I told her I was going hunting.

Its funny I was reading this when she called me at work and I asked her do you know when my next hunting trip is. NOOOO I dont.......... Good Grief for the third time July 12th

Sounds just like mine, but i use the old I told you a month ago trick on her more than I should. I think she is getting use to it now that she has seen how much me and they boy love it and she gets her time to shop etc. It only cost me about $100 a day if shes not ok with it to get me out the door LOL.

I just got back from Rocksprings and seen a bunch (Axis) along the road ditch. Extremely dry out there, and warm. The bucks were velvet & a bunch of doe-fawn sightings. Turkeys were gobbling hot! The pastures out there were bare, looked like the moonscape. Needless to add, deer were looking a bit stressed. Bad enough they don't have much water sources to depend on, now the feed is all dried up with no fresh green growth. Need some R-A-I-N bad!

Axis down. Big old doe and she WASNT preggers. First axis doe I've ever killed that wasn't. Going to try for a Turkey and maybe a second axis.

Group of axis this morning in the brush and wouldn't come out. Two toots on the call and they stepped right out and bang! Venison tonight.

Had a nice Tom talking to me right away. Finally saw him but no shot, too much thick brush in the way.

I ordered my cow elk call from Cabela's this week. Hoping to give it some field work in the very near future.

Shoot 'em up, John! Those turkeys are good eating when prepared properly. I just had one on the B-B-Q.

While cleaning my doe, I could hear a turkey gobbling on the hill. Started talking to him while field dressing. He was chatty! After I had finished I went sat on the hill and immediately had him coming. Unfortunately I could not ever get a shot on him through the heavy brush - but he was a good one. Exciting to see him all puffed up.

Tried for turkey/axis all day but never could connect. Saw plenty, but they were always too far away or on the neighbors ranch. Late in afternoon I was sitting where I was in the morning in the "mini meadow" when the LO texted me "come quick to the house, huge trophy axis on the south fence. I RAN 1/4 mile in full gear back to the house only to catch a glimpse as he headed into the brush. Did not respond to call so I tried a sneak on woods hoping he was heading to ranch to the west. But apparently he went south / southwest because never saw or heard him. The LO and his son who watch walk by slowly said he was a 36" trophy in hard horn and they hasn't seen one that size in quite a while.

Oh well, that's free range axis hunting. No feeders, pure ambush on travel routes or stalking. Never know what will show up or where. Just when you think you have a pattern, they do something completely different.

Anyway, got my doe for meat and it still early for antler trophy hunting.

Nice doe

I
Backstrap - yummmm!

The Mini Meadow, a small open area off the road leading to the house. The road drops in the background to cross Cibolo Creek. Axis love to travel the crystal clear creek and come up to this meadow.
