I need help, not sure what to get. I cannot locate a Ruger Blackhawk with the 6.5" barrel, which I like and have owned in the past. (shock... everyone is out of guns) and I was wanting a sidearm for the ranch.. nothing fancy..
I am used to a S&W Model 27 with 8" barrel 41 Mag... but 41 ammo is a pain to locate... even before all the run on ammo.
Suggestions?
I am a revolver kinda guy.
Love the feel of a Beretta Model 92 though.. just hate the trigger pull on it.
Thanks!
Russ

Don't know if I can help you on the revolver, or if you will find ammo for anything. I have had ruger automatics, ruger super redhawks, etc. but I ended up with a 1911. just fits me well. There is just something to them. I sure would like to find one in 10mm. just for a little more of a certain you know what.
You should give some serious thought to thanking your lucky stars your from Texas.

How about a plastic Glock 20 SF, or a S&W 1006 if you leave Texas, a 357 revolver if you don't.

S&W model 610 10mm Revolver. They are a little hard to find but worth it.

S&W 629 or 29 with 6" barrel 44 mag is hard to beat for a carry gun. You can also shoot 44 specials in it if you want.
For autos, I like full size Kimber 1911 45.

I've got an Italian made model 92 I'll sell you. It's got the longer barrel, some Crimson Trace laser grips, maybe something else I can't remember. If you are really set on a revolver, I have a Python I might be willing to part with as well.
If you're interested, PM me and expect to bring over a sixer to talk it over.

Cabela's in Allen has 41 Remington Mag ammo. when there today that was some of the little ammo on the shelf. Not sure about the Buda store bur would be worth checking. For a wheel gun, I like double actions, S&W 629 and Ruger security 6 being 2 of my favorites

It really depends on how heavy a gun you want. When I'm in high country, nothing I like better than my Stainless 44 mag Vaquero.

Russ Have you considered a .357 mag? Enough power and range for the purpose - much cheaper ammo, many more guns new/used readily available. I ended up with a GP-100 going through the same process that you are. Also, take a look at the ballistics when fired from a lever action carbine. Marc

I have a GP-100 as well and love it, carry 2 shells of rat shot for snakes and the other 4 - 158 gr 357 mag loads. Does the job plenty good. I also have a new toy being a Glock 21sf converted to 45 Super. You can get close to 41 mag preformance from the glock and have 13 rounds to play with.

I use the following side arms:
1. Freedom Arms 97 in 44 Special carried in Diamond D Guides Choice Holster 2. Kimber 1911 10 MM carried in a Diamond D Guides Choice Holster 3. Smith & Wesson 686 357 carried in a Diamond D Guides Choice Holster
I have carried the Freedom Arms on more hunts than the other two combined. It almost always goes with me on my hunts. I have shot 9 hogs, 3 deer, and a Black Buck with the 44 Special. I think it is a great choice for around here.
I also think that a Holster has to be taken into consideration when choosing a side arm to carry while hunting...

Not exactly cheap, but you might want to take a look at a .44 Magnum BFR. I've got one in .500 S&W, and think very highly of it. The .44 is even better, as it has the shorter cylinder.

Model 27 are 357 Magnum....have never seen an 8" barrel either (maybe 8 3/8")...you probably have a Model 57 Smith....if you are happy with the N frame then I would look for a Model 29 6" 44 Magnum....

yea, it is a model 57. I think I am going to get a springfield range officer. I found one for 782 bucks, new.
It is the best all-around choice i think.
I love revolvers, but for the price, I think I can get a 1911 springfield and have a more all-around gun.

If it is not too late I would sing the praises of the ruger gp-100. love my stainless 6 inch barrel.

Having said that, shot placement is key and there is only one level of dead. Us east Texans can't afford turquoise and elk ivories for jewelry. So we use hog tushes and coon peckers.

I carry an old Beater H&R 22 mag or Ruger Single Six. It's handled everything i needed it to. I have others but don't see the need for anything more and it's cheap to shoot. Varmints, bull frogs, run the hog traps it kills em all.

Not yet, sorry.. been super busy. I have not had time to get to the gun store and look at what they have.
I found a new Springfield Field Officer for 782, so will probably go that route, but I may hold off for a couple months so the wife will be happier for spreading the 800+ bucks over a few months.. heh.
Might get it next week if my neighbors pay for their share of the fence I just replaced though :P
