TLTR...I know smile

A month ago I got on a new lease that looks to have promise in Ozona. I've never been turkey hunting but wanted to give it a shot as I've always wanted to. My father got me into hunting although it was never really his thing and unfortunately he passed away at 53 about 5 years ago. I inherited his 12g Wingmaster and wanted my son to kill his first bird with it. I had to send it off to get tapped and get chokes but it was well worth it. I told my son that he would have first dibs on a bird for as long as it took to get him one. Fortunately for me that didn't take long lol. It was a rough and LONG road trip. What was supposed to take 4 1/2 hrs turned into almost 11 hrs. We were loaded and hooked up and hit the road right after I got out of work at 5pm. Half way there in the middle of The Hills Have Eyes nowhere between Van Horn and Fort Stockston the trucks U-Joint decides its had enough bang. Called a tow truck and the wife to pick up the boys....the trip was over before it really got started. We waited 3 hrs in the only gas station within 60 miles (we were lucky!). Interesting times watching some weirdos and kooks roll through including a drugged out or liqoured up older man driving around the parking lot in circles for about 45 minutes...I think he was trying to find the exit wtf So the tow truck arrives and 5 minutes later the wifey pulls in. We get loaded up and hook up the camper to her Yukon and start for home. About 5 miles into the drive home my wife says pull over and call the tow truck driver... I'm going with them to take the truck home and y'all better come back with a turkey! banana I was happy to say the least happy for my boys who were already a little heart broken about the ordeal. I wasn't quite sure about it but she made it clear she wanted us to go so we pulled over loaded our gear up and went back on our trip. By this time it was about 2am and we pulled into camp about 5:30am. We unhooked, unloaded, set up, hit bed about 6:15 and up again right before 7am lol. Sun was just starting to peak out as we made out way to an area that looked like it was a good starting point. As soon as we get there the gobbing erupted and they were close! We quickly got set up in the middle of a semi wide open mesquite flat and 3 of us tried to conceal ourselves behind an anorexic mesquite rofl I look down a clear cut and see about half a dozen so we hunkered down and called. Shortly thereafter the gobblers stopped talking to us. I'm sure they saw us and left so we walked further and got set up again. This time there were hens and gobblers all around us and the woods exploded with chatter. We had 4-6 gobblers talking all around us and some were really close but wouldn't show themselves. Same thing similar happened that afternoon but we saw a gobbler and he was answering us but he was just on the other side of a pasture fence so he finally left. The next morning we had a plan on where to go and where to make our set. We were up before sunrise in the pitch black and walked about 800 yards to our spot. Set out "sexy" my sons nickname for a hen decoy and hunkered down again. As the sun began to rise the gobbling commenced. We had 3-4 gobblers gobbling at the same time all around us again. We also had lots of hens yelping, clucking and purring so the toms had plenty of work to do rounding up the ladies. We stood firm for over 2-3 hrs waiting on a tom to come in. As the morning went on less and less yelping as the toms were collecting them. They came close 3-4 times but never showed themselves until I look down a clear cut about 150 yards away and see a group of about 12 hens and jakes almost on a run towards "sexy". I tell my son to get ready and they made up that distance quick. They were within 20 yards of us and I was sure we were going to get busted but they never saw us. We were quickly disappointed because there wasn't a tom in the group...or so we thought. I tell my son if he wants to take a jake to pick one out and take him. About the time he raises I look to my right through another shooting lane and low and behold there is the tom in full strut and he's only about 20 yards away! I grab my son and turn him around and as soon as he sees him he raises the Wingmaster and as soon as the tom stuck his head up.... KABOOM! I see he's DRT and I jump up like a friggin maniac rip off my head cover and begin to make my boys think I'm a raving lunatic locoroflmao I was so happy for him and as I look down at him he has this look of surprise of what just happened and he can barely stand because his legs were shakin' so bad and the same for my youngest boy who watched the whole thing go down right next to us. So we did our happy dances, calmed our nerves and then began to take pics. I then began to give a class on how to clean and pluck a bird.....the blind leading the blind lol. All in all it was a GREAT weekend and one I won't ever forget and I'm sure neither will my boys. Now I just have to figure out whats wrong with the truck and get er' fixed bang

I think you'll like it grin We were set up down at the southeast corner of the pasture. Down by the creek bottom and the tall oaks. Looks like most of them fly down off their roosts into/near the mesquite flat and then work their way south along that clear cut by the fence. We set up down that clear cut right past the depression where you can see down 3 clear cuts.
