Tell me what you know about hogs please. 10 years ago we saw 30 to 100 hogs running together. The last few years we have seen 3 or 4 running together. Currently we have one huge 300+ pounder on our land, thus not seeing any signs of numerous hogs. Is this big boar running off other hogs?

I doubt it. I've watched a "young" boar (probably 200-215 on the hoof) try to come into the feeder while a sounder of three sows (each about 130 lbs.), their piglets and shoats were eating. They ran him off with extreme prejudice. I almost felt sorry for him.

Number of hogs depends on food water and shelter. If they have all of them and no fear of dying ( hunting pressure or predators ) they will stay and live a long and happy life If better pickings elsewhere they will go there, If they go there and get shot you will not see them again, unless invited to the BBQ. Many, many hogs have come to visit the land I hunt on and never went back to where they came from, but I took them out of the hot humid night and put them in a ice cold chest for a future BBQ The land I hunt on had sounders of 20-30 running around a few years back, now I am lucky to find a single hog or sounder. The property next door has a couple that refuse to come eat the corn and have survived for last 1 1/2 yrs, if they stay over there they will live a long life. If they decide to commit hogcide and cross the fence I will put them in a ice cold chest for a future BBQ I guess they have something in them keeping them from crossing the fence, i think they know bad things happen on the other side of the fence. Some don't think they are that smart, but they have been doing well.

Thanks for both of y'alls input. We hunt in Stephens County. It's just strange how I am seeing fewer hogs. Can't complain, I haven't seen the big packs of pigs lately but I've shot 3 this year so I'm pretty happy about that. Just can't get a shot on this huge hog. Guess they don't get that big by being dumb huh?!?! Going to try to outsmart him this weekend. I am determined now.

Hogs are nomadic rarely do they stay in one place for a long time. There are two kinds of land in Texas those that have hogs and those that are going to get hogs!

I don't think the big pig is running off any; we killed on in Oct that was closer to 400 pounds than he was to 350, and ever since then the population has declined immensely.

We have hunted Stephens Co. almost exclusively the last 3 - 4 years.

Back in 2009 we would see the hogs in high numbers on the field we hunt, 3 - 4 sounders of 10 - 30 pigs EACH all at the same time. They also would come through at dusk fairly regular.

In the last 2 years we haven't seen/killed a single hog during dusk and we still get the occasional sounder but just 1 at a time.

It is my guess that the numbers of hogs are down in my area of Stephens Co.

I'm not sure if maybe the fires in Palo Pinto and Stephens Co changed some of the habitat or as Hard_Ware says, there is just a better offer somewhere else.

I had been told previously that boars were territorial and would run off other hogs. As noted here, however, this does not seem to be the case. In fact, territoriality in hogs is a big ambiguous and if it exists, it exists at the female dominated sounder level, not at the individual level or individual boar level.

From what I have read elsewhere, boars may be solitary for the most part, but would be more apt to follow sounders than to chase them away. So your boar isn't likely to be running off other hogs.

Also looking for info towards these beasts.
I hunt and live in Kendall county. We have a creek running through our so there's plenty of water. They do not show themselves during the day. We catch them on cam on all hours of the night but never during the day. Will they warm up and start coming out during the day?

I'll run into young boars during the day from time to time that have been recently pushed out of a sounder, but if they are under any pressure they tend to stay nocturnal. If you have a large number of contiguous acres and have control over the pressure they are under, you can probably "warm them up" to shoot one in daylight, but they'll likely go right back to being after dark pigs.

I keep game cameras on my feeders and some of the obvious trails. If I notice a consistent pattern I try to get on them at that time. What I notice is that they become very erratic after you've plugged one. In other words, instead of coming in at 8:00 +/- ten minutes every night, you'll see them at 2:00 AM one night, then 10:30 the next, then 4:00 AM, etc. etc. until they gradually settle down. They adapt to the pressure they are under pretty fast.

What is the landscape like? lots of pasture? Has water on the property dropped alot recently? near a river?

The area he is in is heavy mesquite trees with very thick ground cover. He has made trails and tunnels everywhere. Plenty of feeders in the area to provide food. Don't think many or any other hunters around us at this time so shouldn't be pressured. Except for the 4 times I have spotted him down a narrow lane over the past 2 months and pretty sure it is the same hog each time. He is BIG. I am too chicken to walk back there so I bait several spots out in the open where I can see him from a safe distance and hope he will step out. Well he must be watching me from inside his thicket and laughing at me because he hits the bait while I am off watching another bait spot. Now I haven't sat there all night and gave it a 100% effort. Yet! But this weekend is my last chance out in the woods for a while so I am going to sit and wait him out.
