I know someone must have tried this. I have a '99 K1500 4WD suburban. Thinking of building a 1" square tubing high rack to mount where roof rack is. Unsure of weight capacity of the Burb roof.
Anyone had any experience with this? Suggestions?

A lot
fixing to build one on The Reaper. last research I did said the bolt downs for the luggage rack would hold 600lbs each. Going to basically put this

on this

and to give you some idea of weight capacity

If you think about it, it's pretty simple if the vehicle rolls over the internal roll cage must be able to at least in part support the weight of the vehicle

Thanks! That's exactly what I was wanting to build. Just wasn't sure about the strength of the roof.
Are you fastening at the existing roof rack mounts only?

On the 89 we used a piece of flat 2" strap bolted to the roof every foot or so. On the 99 I plan on using the same 2" strap but using the bolt locations that are already on the roof rack, that way I can take off the hunting rack when not in use.

here is a closer pic of the roof mount on the 89
