Looking at buying myself a new (to me) used Ford 250. I have always been a Chevy guy, so I would like some input from those of you that have actual experience with either engine. Pros/cons. Thanks. The 6.0 is a 2007 and the 6.4 is a 2008 if that makes any difference. Thanks for the comments.

The 6.0 is a great motor when it's running right... I had one of the first yr model 6.0s in 350 that I never had any problems with and had alot of power... I have a 06 450 model now and is a pain to keep up but will pull anything.. Dnt know much bout a 6.4... Just get tha real ford motor in a 7.3 and you will love it

I work on a fleet of 6.0 and 6.4 trucks.These engines are junk.Either find an older 7.3 truck or a newer 6.7.

The 6.4 can be an awesome motor if the right mods are done like I have and have yet to see another motor get the mileage or power I get

the 2007 6.0 was the last year in the fords, this motor has a majority of the bugs worked out of it. The 6.4 is a great motor also but both will require some items to be fixed just like the 6.0.

6.0 will need the egr deleted with oil cooler replaced. This is not a hard tast to complete in your drive way. You will need a tuner to clear codes after this.

6.4 will need the egr deleted and dpf removed or cleaned often to gain fuel mileage and not fail. This will also require a tuner.

Both of these trucks will need head studs if your trying to push a bunch of power. You can take it to a good powerstroke mechanic to do this or change them one at a time yourself.

BEFORE YOU BUY TAKE IT TO A GOOD POWERSTROKE SHOP!!! Dont just go to anyone, go somewhere they work on powerstrokes every day.

Both of these are great motors with a little work on them. The power of the 6.4 is unreal.

The people that praise the 7.3 are correct, they were reliable motors and this is because they did not have emissions systems on them to fail and they didnt have enought power to break anything.

I have all three.. 6.0, 6.4 and 6.7

Not a fan of the 6.4... even made bullet proof still not going to break 18mpg and will always have radiator issues.

Late model 06 and 07 6.0 are great trucks. Lots of power!! And good mpg's
Id still have mine if it didn't get stolen

I had problems with both the 6.0 and the 6.4 at around 100,000miles. Have the 6.7 now and so far no problems.

I have an 08 6.4, had the exhaust filter and sensor burn out which needed to be replaced. Also had the hydraulic booster for the steering/braking system fail. Both these issues occured shortly after purchasing used at 72,000 miles. This is my first diesel but can tell you as most have said, they're expensive to own. Since these issues were resolved I haven't had any problems with it. I am waiting for my warranty to expire so I can get the EGR deleted, and will look into DPF work now as well. (Had no idea about it)

There are DPF deletes ( starting to be hard to find with the epa crack down) and there are aftermarket high flow dpf's.

The DPF gets dirty and clogged which makes the truck go into regen mode. Regen is when the computer dumps a bunch of fuel into the cylinders making extra heat that cleans the dps. If the dpf is failing then the truck is in constant regen and running hot egt for long periods of time is not good at all.

I would suggest looking on diesel forums like
powerstroke nation
diesel bombers
powerstroke army

and doing some research on the trucks.

Read this and this Should be able to find one really cheap; resell value stinks. Dealers won't touch them or offer few grand in on trade. So if want to risk the monster repair costs and mods needed maybe able to get in one cheap.

Lots to consider if you're buying a 6.0. I sent you a PM regarding a few things. As for me, I love my 6.0.

This is the best advise. Listen to the guy with experience with these trucks. We have them at work also. I wouldnt take one if you gave it to me cause your just trying to give your problem to someone else.

Just get one with the 7.3 and be done with it. Don't have to worry about spending extra money to get it to run right and not self destruct. It will pull anything you need to pull and will last forever.

Others would take it and put half a million miles on it. Different strokes for different folks (no pun intended).

This is correct. I would choose a 6.0 over a 7.3 any day of the week and just do the items i mentioned above. 7.3 was a good truck but will not ever hold a candle to any of the newer diesels.

Consumers want a 800 lb of torque diesel that is
quiet
fuel efficient
cheap
fast
smooth
luxurious

these things dont go together easily, especially with the epa on their back.

Some might want that. I don't. I want a diesel that is strong, reliable, and obnoxious. The 7.3 fits that, especially with a few mods.

I'm a ford fan but the 7.3 is not a very strong engine, reliable yes...but strong it doesn't compare to the old 12 cummins or duramax . And it sure doesn't compare to any engine made after 04 pulling wise

If u have to stay with a ford, get a 7.3 turbo, non pwr stroke or do a cummin eng swap. There are wiring kits to modify the ford n chevy tck for the cummins eng. stay with the 01-07 5.9L

You can get a 6.0 and never have all the issues and crap that people complain about (funny most never owned one, just heard). We have a 99 7.3, 05 6.0, 08 6.4 and 2013 6.7 right now, as well as a few dodges. Honestly, my 6.0 will out perform and be more reliable than all of them with the exception of the new 6.7. I absolutely love my 6.0. Delete the EGR and put you a small programmer on it and it will treat you right. Same goes for the 6.4 Both have crappy reputations, and for the most part, a good reason why. But, Dodges have a LOT of the same issues and even some that the power strokes don't. The 7.3 is a great motor, but if you work it as a truck, you will have more problems than the others. The 6.4 has over 200,000 miles and hasn't broken down yet. We even did a large single turbo swap on it and beat on it daily. Tranny is slipping, but that will happen when you have over 600 hp at the wheels. The 6.0 is over 150,000 miles, modified a bunch of crap and is pulling heavy loads with custom race tunes and still going strong. The 7.3 is completely stock and has around 130,000 and has been in and out of the repair shop it's whole life. The 02 Dodge is a great truck, but keeping the front end under it is a pain and it's just freakin loud and rough ride. What ever you choose, do some research, get the vehicle history and what repairs have been made and how good/or bad the maintenance was kept up on it. Maintenance is key to any diesel.

Resale value is great on all of the diesels out there. So look for that good deal that fits what you need. And if anyone out there wants to give me their 6.0 that is a "problem", I'll gladly take it and put a few thousand in it and sell it. We work on diesels everyday and to be honest, the ones we see more problems in are the cummins. 6.0 and 6.4 aren't far behind, but now people know what to do to them to make them reliable.

Whatever you get, research, research and research. Figure out which problems your willing to deal with cause they all got em.

Issue with the 7.3 is simple it hasn't been made in 10 years, so good luck finding one that isn't over 200K (you never said what exactly you were looking for). Yes they are out there but people know their reputation and think that makes them worth more.

I have owned an 06 with the 6.0 and never had a lick of trouble. Godfather owns an 04 with the 6.0 no problems. Did have a buddy who got an 05 excursion and had a ton of problems so kinda of a crap shoot.

On the 6.4, never heard any major mechanical issues from guys I know who have them , do know even with twin turbos (more to break so just be aware) only issue was their MPG was horrible stock so plan to drop a little to help it out.

I know you didn't mention the 6.7 but that is what I have now and if it is simply a budget issue because they are going on 3 years old themselves so you can find decent used ones. I have right at 50K on mine (2011) had one issue at 11K with a DEF sensore but dealership replaced it in 15 minutes and never an issue since.

I have owned a 2006 6.0 and it was great. I put a program in it and it had a ton of muscle and got reasonable gas mileage. 15 -16 mpg on avg. and 20 mpg on the highway.
I then bought a 2008 & 2009 6.4 version and all I can say is they SUCK. No power and they were diesel hogs. Best I could get was 13 mpg on a daily basis and 9-10 mpg pulling a utility trailer to the ranch.
Now I have a 2012 6.7 and it seems to have good power and I get 17-18 mpg on a daily basis and 18-20 on the highway.
For what it is worth...the ONLY advantage the 6.4 has over the 6.0 is lower noise levels...much quieter.

You've never had to pull a 32' load of cattle over ranger hill.

For the time period the 7.3 was offered...id take the 12 valve cummings over it. .again 7.3 is a good engine but in that time frame it was far from the king
