I have a friend that wants to come in one weekend next month with his dogs and do an all out two day hog hunt. As much as I would like to eliminate as many hogs as possible, I am concerned about the impact that it will have on the deer. Another concern is that it also will be Spring Turkey season. Your thoughts?

Turkey will get outa tha way and they wnt be able to catch a deer even if they do run them... The deer are getting chased by yotes all the time IMO so they rant goin to react any different... We always run dogs during off season and it does nothing but help the deer.... Hunting and trappin together wnt put half the pressure on hogs that dogs will.... Go ahead win win for you

I wouldn't have a problem with it on my place. It will move the deer around, but they will settle back in. Don't think a couple of days would hurt the deer or turkey.

How will it hurt your deer hunting? Deer season doesn't open for another 6 months. They'll more than settled by then.

Elimination of hogs helps the population of other animals. Less competition. Dogs may scare game animals away for a short time, but if the food/water resources are there, they will be back.

I run my dogs of two of my friends leases and have had no problem with deer if the dogs are trained correctly deer shouldn't be a problem what so ever... If any of y'all would like to do a hog dog hunt on your place give me a call I'd be happy to show you some good dog work..

The benefits of taking out hogs or scaring them off far outweigh the cons of spooking a couple of deer temporarily. My previous neighbor used to run dogs after both hogs and lost cattle all the time. Didn't have any effect that I noticed, other than 1 times his dogs ran right past me and I didn't see any deer that hunt only. Saw deer the next morning.

You'll be fine. The deer will get over it soon.

That doesn't sound like a very good recommendation. I'm leaving it up to my hunters.

If the dogs are worth a darn it wont be a problem. If they trash on anything that moves, the owner should have culled them or shocked them more. My dogs dont trash on deer. But skunks...they can't resist for some reason.

wont bother your deer at all if they are trash broke , even if they arent they will run deer for a min then stop an the deer will stop to an go back to doing his thing

No way I would want that done on my land. On my land, those hogs aren't really a problem. I recently posted a question here about whether hogs were really a problem. I would say that 90% of the landowners said no. I agree that the deer will come back over time. However, so will the hogs. I don't see how you will really accomplish anything.

Now, all that said, I already have dogs on my land. I have neighbors dogs, feral dogs and stray dogs. I've had a lot more dog problems than I have hogs. I shoot them whenever I can.

Dave , the hogs will leave some times for months after being hunted with dogs , the deer will not , tried an true method ,

The 90% of the landowners you talked to were prolly not farmers just a landowner trying to sound like a rancher and not actualy getting income from their land be it cattle, hay, deer.... cuz if they did they wouldnt be thinkin that way.

The deer will be back the next day even if they run off the place....

The old rancher that I lease my hay rights to absolutely hates the hogs because he has to till and level the damage they do every year and it's a lot of work and a lot of cost on already razor-thin margins.

Do I hate the hogs? No, because I like to hunt them. But anybody actually ranching their land absolutely wants them dead and gone.

I had my 1st opportunity to hunt with dogs in Leon county. These dogs wouldn't run deer and I saw numerous occasions where deer just ran a couple hundred yards and just hunkered down and watched the show. We got 6 hogs in 3 hours plus some babies killed. It looks like a decent tool to help control populations. Definitely runs the hogs out for awhile and its a heck of a lot of fun!

i can hunt a place and strike hogs with dogs and never put a dog on the ground. my dog dont run all over the land they ride on my hood of the truck. as we drive by deer they look and just duck in to the brush. come go with me and ill show u in a high fence that 180 inch deer while the dogs stay on my hood. if you do dog yur place it will take 2 or 3 times to run the hogs off , but 8 mnth to a yr they will come back.good luck with the dogs. do it the month before bow season and you will see more deer at the feeder

I think they were out of Centerville but not sure. One of the lead guys was Steven, Goolsby I think was his last name. 2 of the guys are brothers, one of them is some kind of law enforcement officer. great guys, absolutely fearless!

X2 I bet you cant find even one real rancher or farmer that doesnt have a problem with hogs if they are on their land.

what if your dogs spook deer..lets say a genentically superior buck that contributed mightily to the gene pool..that buck breaks his neck jumping a fence being spooked by dogs..is that worth it..especially if you pay a couple of grand to hunt the deer..i want all the odds on my side when i pay out the cash..if i was a member of a lease that allowed dogs to run hogs..i would leave that lease..just my opinion..

Anyone that thinks dogs will harm deer or cause them to vacate their residence, simple doesn't know. They haven't been around dogs and deer for any length of time. Instead they're quick to jump on the band wagon with Jimmy Bob because he said it happens. I always suggest that if you haven't seen it with your own eyes, then you ought not speak on the subject. Now I'm not talking stray or wild dogs praying on your farm animals or wildlife. I have had plenty of that happen and took care of the problem. I think the conversation here is about stock or hunting dogs.

The truth is, stock dogs or hunting dogs will have no effect on the deer AT ALL. The deer will simple move out of the way and go back about their business. They often will watch the dogs pass by within 50 yards. I've been a hunter, rancher and handled working dogs my entire life. These words aren't hearsay or what if, they aren't coffee shop talk of so in so said. These are the words of the truth that I've seen day after day and night after night. In fact I watched it happen last night and I'm going to go put my dogs in the woods again right now.

The deer will not be bothered. If you want the hogs gone, go ahead and run the dogs. Good luck and happy hunting.

Issue settled. A couple of my hunters will be on the place hunting turkey that weekend. One of them will have his supervisor guest hunting with him. These guys are paying the freight. Not sure why a group would schedule a hog hunting contest during turkey season anyway.
