Your guns are fine for that hunt. The terrain around Buffalo is not difficult at all, good hiking boots will work well. As for cloths well hard to tell it can be cold or warm that time of year. Have seen some good bucks from I25 in that area in the past and lots of deer. Have hunted Montana in November several times and seen it cold that we did not get above zero for a week, another year killed out the first 2 days and fished in shirt sleeves the rest of the week.

You will need some good bino's since you will spend lots of time with them and a spotting scope would sure be useful. Let the optics save a lot of walking.

You will see the whitetails mostly in the river and creek bottoms. Alfalfa fields are a huge draw for the deer there. Lots of sage brush but it is generally short but the deer can sure hide in it when bedded. Probably the biggest mulie buck I have seen was south of Buffalo in an alfalfa field. You will also see lots of speed goats around. It will be a lot different from what you are accustomed to in East Texas but does make for a fun hunt.

In the mornings try to locate a good buck while he is going to bed down then figure a way to stalk within shooting range. During the day some can be spotted when they get up and stretch and get a bite to eat.

Good luck and have fun, it sure is fun hunting other places

You might check into pronghorn tags also. Sometimes even after a draw there are still leftover doe tags that can be had over the counter.

You might want to order some snow gators from Cabelas. As Kmon1 said, weather can go warm or cold with a lot of snow. These aren't that expensive and you will be glad you have them if your walking around in the snow all day. 270 is all you need for any of the game you'll be hunting. Don't forget to bring shooting sticks, preferably tripod type, one of the most important pieces of equipment you will need. If your used to hunting east Texas, go to a gun range or land that you can practice 200+ yard shots. I'd advise you to sight your 270 in at 2" high @ 100 yards with a 130 grain round. This will give you a hold on target kill zone out to 250 yards. Also bring a range finder as this will be just as important as you binoculars.

If your taking a 270 with you, that is all you'll need. I've taken two New Mexico muley's with a 100gr .243 at 100yrds. As for weather in Buffalo, prepare for anything from snow to warm and sunny. It changes fast. I used to live in Laramie, and if there is anything you can expect it is sudden weather changes.

Are you certain that you will draw the tags? It's good to get ready and make plans and a list but you may want to hold off on actually buying much gear until your sure you have drawn. And your 7mm and your 270 are both great choices just pack the one that you have the most confidence in and shoot the best. You will have fairly open shots in that area and chances are you will be glassing and hiking a fair amount. Best of luck!

One more note... get a good map!!! Region C is confusing with the available walk-in areas and public lands. Unless of course your hunting private land...

I second what everyone has said. 3x9 is fine. May want to borrow a spotting scope. Finding them is the key-give yourself every edge.

Dress in layers. Good base like merino wool, etc. Cabelas microtex is a good affordable shirt. Fleece is good and affordable. Key is shell layer must be waterproof, NOT water resistant. Get a good reasonably priced down jacket like the Browning 700 for 90 bucks or so-you will not regret it.

Have fun!

Looks like the General Mule Deer tag for Unit C is 100% draw success. Good luck on the hunt !

A combo hunt for deer and antelope would work well in the Buffalo area. If you want to dramatically improve your chances, consider an outfitter, especially for your first hunt. Ross Adney of Beaver Trap Outfitters--who hunts around Buffalo--would be my choice.

i had a good season to last year a 320 pound bear in minnesota , and a decent buck in west texas , this will be my first hunt out west, i did consider a outfitter, but my kin in area who was a hunting guide at one time assures me he can get us a good hunt and he will moe or less be our guide , pays to have kin and be on good terms with them

The 270 is the only gun you need to take. If area C goes all the way to the south end of the Bighorns out of Buffalo (actually Kacee) you will have some great hunting. The middle fork of the Powder River foothill area has some of the biggest mulies you will see and there are usually pretty good numbers of them. That is also the #1 mountain lion area in WY. Historically it is the entrance to the outlaw cabins and the Hole in the Wall bunch. Some of the cabins are still there. If you just want to burden yourself with an extra gun, take a .223, 22-250 or some other varmiter and take on some of the marmots after you get your mulie.

Have a great trip piney woods hunter. I was up there two months ago and will be going back this summer. Love that country - hate the snow. I may still have topos for all that area if you don't have any. Would have to look through the box and see if you were interested.

Not sure if it was mentioned yet or not, but I am from Utah, not far from where your headed. Make sure you practice your long range shots. From what I have read on here and talking to others, the adverage shot for a Tx deer is about 150yds and below, your adverage shot for a Ut, or Wy, Mulie, is going to be 150 to 300 yrds easy.... get a laser ranger, and a damn good scope, I would say a Mil dot for the caliber your using. The Deer as you know weigh about twice to three times what a Tx deer does. But I know alot of my friends and family that are still in Ut hunt with a .270, my uncle has killed tons of deer and even a few elk with his .243, but I don't recomend that for the longer shots. at a minimum, a .270. My old man used to shoot everything from Rabbits to elk with his 7mm Mag, but that's just cause he was a little nuts.... lol Have a great time, and dress warm....and in layers, cold mornings and evenings, mid day warms up a bit....
