Hey just wondered if anyone is still hunting out at Twin Buttes in San Angelo. Newer hunter looking to learn as much as possible and find someone who knows the areas. I know its shotgun and bow only and I don't have a problem with that. Would love to learn how to hunt duck, dove, turkey, deer...anything. Thanks for any advise.

See if you can find the member with screen name of Hunter Man, he used to write about hunting the Twin Buttes area or OC Fisher area. Look in the off topic section or the gun regulations forum.

Good hunting out there if you go during the week. Stay away from the obvious places. It gets crowded and can be a little dangerous. Get a map, the area is huge over 14,000 ac.

I've never hunted Twin Buttes, but I've got a lease that's not too far from there, and I don't work far from there. If you want someone to show you the ropes, let me know. I've spooked a lot of deer in my life. I can show you everything you shouldn't do.

I hunted out there up until last year, dove hunting is pretty awesome for the first week, then it's so shot out you won't see much after that. For ducks it was hit and miss, with the water levels there are only maybe 3 spots that are worth a damn and every kid in the ag dept knows about it. Turkey hunting is good, the best place for them used to be on the south pool wayyyy back down the river, you have to go in past the police academy and drive for about 45 minutes once you hit dirt to get back in there. If you don't have a quad and like your nice shiny truck then don't expect to have much luck, success out there depends on how little you care about your paint job!

What hunter, worth calling himself such, is worried about the paint job on his huntin' wagon?

I used to hunt just this side of Big Lake, with my nephew and BIL. Turkey was great, and after many years of hunting thick pines with no deer I was on mesquite, cedar and cactus. We were on a 15k lease with ten guys. My first deer off there was a 140+ 8 point. We had loads of dove near the stock tanks. Dang good lease. Had no issue tagging out and shooting a limit. Good luck.

I didn't know they existed until I met a couple of people out there complaining about not seeing anything

Well it looks promising. Checked out the south pool this morning and loved what I saw (and didn't see). There was only one other person out there that I saw and he was kayak fishing. Buddy and I caught 15 crappie and a couple of bass and one iPhone 4s decided to go swimming.
Need to scout it out more for hunting but at least the fishing was good.
