Came home yesterday and i was missing a dog, my 4 month old pup Legend. I started searching around and found a hole dug to my neighbors back yard ( my neighborhood backs up to a older larger tract neighborhood) I call his name and hear the neighbors dogs back there barking but not his so i go over there and the owner of the home is not there.

One of my buddies decides to open his back gate and take a look around out of a whim (this was not a very responsible action but worked out perfect) I see him jump on the ground and pull a black dog out of a deep hole. That black dog was my yellow lab covered in septic solution.

My pup had fell into my neighbors septic tank and was drowning. I grabben him and jumped in the back of my truck, told my wife to drive straight to the vet while holding the pup in my arms. He is freezing cold, cant open his eyes and is having a hard time breathing.

The vet helps him out and he is doing great now. Scared me half to death and the vet said he was in bad shape, his body temp dropped 20 degrees and he was on the verge of drowing.

He is doing great. Still smells terrible and is very very tired.

Just had to share my story somewhere.

OMG! Poor pup! So lucky your instincts were right on the money. Good luck in recover. I'm sure your vet told you this but be careful for future respiratory issues. I'm sure he got a penicillin shot already but if he aspirated any of that septic he'll be more susceptible to lung problems in the future.

They pumped him out and gave him tons of antibiotics, eye drops, shots, pills, special food, ect.

poor guy! glad that worked out for the best. Mix up a paste of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda & dawn dish washing detergent and bathe him in it... that should take care of the smell.

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup of baking soda
1 to 2 teaspoons Dawn

Glad everything turned out okay for you guys...real good looking pup!

My new pup fell in the pool at night when she was about 7 weeks old and it was below freezing outside. She had not been home more than a couple days. I let her out to go do her business and she fell right off the edge and went under. I thought all dogs knew how to swim.... nope. Good thing i was watching....I ran and was able to get her but she was about a foot and half down. Filled up with water and was coughing like crazy. Scared both of us pretty bad.

It's almost like having a baby all over again.... Things you think they should know, but they don't.

Wow. Glad that turned out ok - and I hope he continues to do well where bacteria, etc. are concerned. Our canine buddies never seem to run out of ways to make life "interesting" (not to mention "expensive.") But what would we do without them? Best wishes til you get a clean bill of health and full recovery!

Sounds like my older lab. She managed to sink to the bottom of the breeders pool in the dead of winter when she was 5 weeks.

I don't understand the mentality of an open septic tank.

Is an open sceptic tank even legal? I've never even heard of such a thing. Sounds disgusting.

That works on skunk and other odors probably will work on the smell.

Glad you got the little guy in time, that would be one terrible way to go, freezing and drowning in SH__

I dont think it was a open septic tank, I think the lid was damaged and he didnt have it covered. I dont understand it but i talked to him and told him that it needs to be fixed, what if a child fell in it?

Legend is back to himself 100% and acts like nothing happened. I took him back to the vet yesterday and they said he looks great.

Glad he's back to normal. My ex brother in law, (not the sharpest knife in the drawer) had a boxer mix when he lived here at the lake, he would always put her outside on the back porch if the weather was nice, one morning he decided it would be a good idea to tie her up out on his boat dock so she could enjoy the nice breeze from the lake while he was gone. Well, she jumped off (more than likely after some ducks swimming by), we live just around the corner & my parents live next to my wife & I, the neighbor lady came running over to my Dad screaming Amy's drowning! Amy's drowning! So Dad runs over there & sure enough, there was Amy, treading water (barely), trying to get to the bank but the rope wasn't long enough, she was in about 8' of water, dad ran onto the dock, cut the rope & threw it in the lake she swam to the bank & collapsed, luckily for her, the neighbor lady saw her, if she hadn't, Amy wouldn't have lasted much longer. Would be a horrible way to die & a horrible way to find your dog.

My ID10T dope headed ex-brother in law chained my sisters border collie with just enough chain to get over the gate. That's how they found her. If I hadn't been in the service in Thailand I'd have taken a 2x4 to his stupid A@@.
