Your elected officials don't believe you possess the intelligence to make decisions for yourself. Therefore, as your benefactor, they want to dictate how you live your life. The more people they have on the payroll (welfare and social programs), the greater chance they have of remaining in office. No one wants to bite the hand that feeds them. Those not on the government take are the problem. They cannot dictate to you until they have disarmed you.
